Weird problem with car dying... after about 30 mins

Ok so here is where Im at. Recently my car flooded. (or so I believed) So I did the ol' push the car with another car until it starts trick. Car starts up and off I go.

Now its about a week later and it seemed like it flooded again, I push the car to get it running and it starts up. I leave it running in the driveway for about 30 mins to make sure everythings ok and to bulid up the oil seal again. I Drive around the block and it dies, while Im on the accelerator. Weird thing is, my tachometer did this sputter thing and went to zero about 30 seconds before my car actually died.

So I try the same method again. Car starts up, I leave it sitting for 30 mins, drive around block, tachometer goes to zero, 30 secs later car dies. Whats going on?

Also each time I have to charge the battery up before pushing it, other wise it just makes a rapid clicking noise.

this is going to sound funny but have you checked your alternator belt? it might be silipping in the pulley and not charging the batt and then eventually the car runs out of power and dies. thats the first thing i would check, the second thing make sure your alternator is generating as much output as it is required. is the battery keeping the charge how old is it? other than that i wouldnt know what to tell you good luck.

I havent checked the alternator and the battery is basically brand new. I did have it checked recently though. I also checked the starter about two weeks ago on a problem I thought was unrelated. I will due the basic "remove ground wire" alternator check when I get a chance.

But also shouldnt it start up after the battery is recharged? Regardless of how the alternator is performing?

IF its a new battery, than it shouldn't be dieing in 30 min unless theres poor wiring/connection (on the batter terminal or elsewhere) OR your alternator is not producing enough voltage to run the car and charge the batter. Either way, your alternator takes over for electrical stuff on your ride when you start the car, the battery only has the function of running electrical equipment when the car is off.

So I agree with Polito and you should start with checking the voltage output on your alternator, using haynes or FSM.

*EDIT*

Btw, I don't know about your tach, but I know things don't work right without correct voltage, just a thought.

i think its electrical also. does the car start after it dies? does this happen everytime you fire it up? what does the voltage read?

yes logicfoxX you are right, once the battery drains the tach will go bananas and gauge will become unstable until it just stops working, then whatever other sensor running will draw whatever little power is left in the battery until the car dies.

hmmm so all sources point to the alternator, huh. I'll go take it out and bring it to AutoZone and have them test it today. I have to take it since I KNOW the car wouldnt make it there and back.

Brandonn- Well I can't get it to fire up with out doing the push thing, and then every time I do get it started, I let it warm up for 30 mins and it dies after 1 min of driving.

Does anyone have any guess as to why after the battery dies, and I recharge it, then I have to push the car with another car to get it started? Is it because of the way the battery dies the car gets flooded? Thoughts?

Another thing to point out, If you don't have a fully charged battery or a damaged/old battery starting the car, your car will flood. From past experiance and a qoute from another thread, you need somewhere near 250 rpm to get a good firing start.

If you are flooding it like you said you did to start with...there are ways out there that will be better on you car than doing a push start
