Help us help you. Download the Factory Service Manual (workshop manual) and go through the troubleshooting sections for hesitation when the engine is running. That's in the 04A_Fuel_and_Emission_control_systems_non_turbo.pd f. This will get you up to speed. Start on page F1-13.

Thumbs up

I had the same problem - .... go easy on the gas pedal.. fine... but at 3500 rpm it would "bog down" or "sputter" if I went any faster.... Turned out to be that the variable port valves were sticking and needed replacing.

As soon as a replaced them - it "Purred like a kitten" - smooth acceleration right up to red-line.

if anything...you should first go to the auto parts store and get a fuel pump filter sock for a 86 to whenever rx-7 (all interchangeable) and replace that. not a fuel filter, but a filter sock...it goes directly onto the fuel pump.
