Which way do you put the t-stat in the oil cooler?

My friend was trying to fix an oil leak while I was soldering some stuff in my car. He popped the drain plug off the oil cooler and dropped the thermostat/spring and doesnt remember how it goes together properly. Anyone have any input? I dont think itd be the best thing to have it backwards.
