Waterpump Housing Question

I was trying to put in a new thermostat, and the bolts broke. I luckily had a new housing and pump assembly from Mazda(Trix). Bought it years ago, and finally needed it, what luck.

Anyway I put it all back together and realized there where two new washers in bags in the bottom of the box. I can only assume they go on behind the housing on the two studs that don't have the gasket behind them. How important are these? I don't think I have any leaks, to soon to tell if they are small. Mazda parts guy I talked to called these cooling system gaskets. The FSM calls them spacers. Both of these terms make them sound more important than washers.

Thanks for any help.

They are spacers, used to distribute the pressure the bolts put on the seal evenly, so that there is less chance of develpoing leaks.

^^ Zokus, I like what you said best, LESS chance of a leak. I was afraid someone would sat that the waterpump housing was known to crack without those spacers on there. I think I'm going to go ahead and redo the job anyway, but I've got to get another housing to block gasket, so I might as well get all the hoses that I haven't replaced in the last month and replace them too while I'm at it, and convert to Evans NPG, might as well. Good thing this is an easy *** motor to tear apart. Its even fun.... when its not 100 degrees outside

Sweet. I can wait till monday. Do you have a pump to bac hose that is new or really good? that one doesn't have any real crazy bends except the right angle at the pump, might be able to come up with something at the store? The other hoses I can get to anytime so I'm not worried much about that.

nothing good. we could make something at the store but they think the world of molded hose. I sold a 90 degree with 5 inches on either side for like $8. we'll think of something.

Eh... I'll just put in another MAzdatrix order. I'll be selling that corolla before long. I can spend a little money on the 7. BTW.. I figured out my 3800 rpm problem. Ask me next time I see you.. It's so stupid I won't admit to it in front of other people
