Hey- trying to replace my water pump and i cannot get at the last bolt under the crank pulley. Do i take the pulley off? and which way is it threaded? thanks.

 

Four small, 10mm wrench size bolts hold the pulley on the hub. Free download of the FSM is available.

 

im trying to take the whole water pump off and the last bolt is behind the crank pulley. How do i get to that bolt? Should i take the crank pulley off? if so which was is it threaded?

I'd remove the pulley(s). They are held on with only four little 10mm size bolts. All lefty lucy. Life will be much easier if you do that.

Remember, when you put the pulley back on, the bolt pattern for the four only fits one way. Do NOT wallow out any holes to get it back on. Maybe put a paint stripe on the pulleys so you can relocate them like they were when you took them off?? YEs.

Loosen or remove the belts prior to removing the pulleys.

??????? IF the pulleys are off you should have lots of room to access that last bolt/nut.

Collapsing hose? I've never had that. You might have tried to remove the thermostat to see if that made a difference. I wouldn't have thought water pump myself, but then again I've never had a collapsing water hose. Got me.

If you already have a new pump, might as well replace the old one and have a go at it.

You sure that thing was full of water????? Sometimes if the whole system is empty it's a little difficult to fill it back up. I'd remove the thermostat and fill it up again, and again til it's topped off.

 

i *think* it was filled all the way. I put a gallon in and the overflow tank was way over the full line. I wasnt able to get the crank pulley because when i try to turn it, it just turn the motor. I put the car in gear and tried again, still couldnt get the pulley off without the motor turning. i have a pic of the bolt im trying to remove.


i dont know if that will show up. Sorry its so bright... darn $10 walmark cameras. But anyway, its hard to tell but the botl is dead center of the pic behind the crank pulley.

 

your pic doesnt work. if you cant get the pulley bolts off try holding the pulley with your hand so it doesnt turn or hit them with an impact.

 

Don't remove the 19mm bolt in the center of the pulley. Remove the FOUR small, 10mm socket size bolts. The 19mm stays where it is. If I misread you, sorry 'bout that, but a 10mm bolt when turned by a wrench/socket ain't a gonna turn the engine over if you turn it counterclockwise.

 

Here's the only jpg I could find of the four bolt holes in the pulley. And they are not that clear.

i thought you were talking about the 4 bolts on the water pump! i see now. Now that i read back over what you said it makes perfect sense, the misunderstanding was totally my fault.

so i got the four 10mm bolts off the crank pulley, the fan was being a pain gatting in the way but w/e. but i cant get the pulley off. I tried tieing string around and pulling on the string to get a better grip but it wouldnt budge. This is way harder than it should be just for a water pump...

 

tap on the sides of it with a rubber mallet. it'll come off. you there are probably 3 pullies on there. you only need to remove 2 of them.

 

ok, will do. Is there a way to take that pesky fan off? it has been driving me crazy. I took off the 4 screws on the back of the fan to its "free" behind the fan clutch. There are 4 screws on the end of the water pump pulley that I think would take the fan off but i cant budge them.

 

there are just 4 bolts. take them off and push/pull on the sides of it.

 

The pulleys in my picture should have come off relatively easy. Maybe a light tap with a tool against the side of them and they should have come loose. Some times the hang just a touch on the front of the hub they are attached to.

Yeah. I'd have taken the fan off right away because it gets in the way. The first time taking it off might be a little difficult but gets easier the next time because you've done it before.

Behind the fan blades, on the hub the fan is attached to, there are four small 10mm nuts that have to be removed. Then the fan can be removed in a fwd direction. I usually have to take the shank of a long screwdriver and insert it b/t two of the four studs to hold the fan assy in place as one nut is removed at a time. The screwdriver shank is used to keep the assy from rotating as you remove one nut at a time.

 

best idea ever. The only reason i didnt take it off sooner was b/c i couldnt get a grip on it. thx.

So i tried using the screw drived method and i was able to take 2 off, but the other 2 wont budge. My wrench started to strip them to i used a vicegrip and it held well but the screw driver stsarted to bend... so i now have a screw driver thats bent at a 90 degree angle and 2 nuts that wont move.

 

spray some penitrating oil on them an let it sit for a few,try a bigger screw driver,and use a six point wrench,instead of twelve point to remove the stuborne ones,series four water pumps are much easier to remove due to diff in front cover,but thats how it goes,and don't ever take off that 19mm bolt unless your willing to take of front cover to make sure spacer and needle bearing didn't drop,cause if they do your endplay will be off.oh and when the hard ones do come loose don't be surprized if the studs come out with the nuts,just put them back in like a bolt,hope that helps
