Im trying to remove the old water pump off my 86 GXL, I wanted to know if you have to take off the main pulley to get it off?

You shouldnt HAVE to remember, it's just easier, it should only go on one way.

The pulleys must be removed to get to one of the water pump bolts. They're held on by four 10mm bolts, and are easily removed (you don't touch the big bolt in the middle). They seperate into four seperate pieces. One of the four holes in each pulley is slightly offset, so it'll only go back together one way. Get those offset holes lined up before you attempt to reinstall the pulleys, or you'll achieve nothing but frustration.

yeah they can only go back together 1 way... if you find more than 1 way to put them back together... you have a problem
