Water pump.

I have had 2 new water pumps and 2 used water pumps w/i the last year and a half. What could be causing this premature failure of my water pumps?

Are you purchasing rebuilt ones, or new ones? and from where? Tensioning is critical on water belts, both over-tensioning, and loose belts cause a lot of problems.

I dont really know if they were knew or rebuilt.. I will assume that they were rebuilt b/c the 2 came from pep boys. Remans was the brand I think. Do you think that my housing could have anything to do w/ it I dont see any major chips or anything?

Have you flushed your entire cooling system out and checked for debris? Debris could cause some of your problems. I personally don't think that your housing is the issue, I would still say that the tension on your belt is causing your problems.

From personal experience , from starter's, to alternator's, water pump's, etc. I have never had much luck with rebuilds.

Oh... Ok, will look for another one then.... secondly, if the tension on the belt were to loose/tight, it would squeek right?

i think it would only squeek if the belt were too lose, i think to tight would destroy bearings ect..

If you really think about tension, whether it is to tight or loose, both create problems. If it is to tight, you're putting a greater stress on the bearings. If it is too loose, it could slip and not allow the full function of the pump, plus also create a bearing problem. Start up your car, and warm it up, and at idle, look at the belt. Is it flopping? Now, increase the rpms of the engine while watching the belt. See the difference?

One more thing to look at carefully, is the pulley on the pump in correct alignment with the other pulleys? If it is cocked, or the other ones, "OFF" alignment , that will also create a problem. Hope this helps.

yep Dog is right on, on this one.

Too tight belts are the biggest contributer to bad water pumps
