Washers on the wastegate = more power?

A buddy of mine own a 1991 Turbo Supra, and he was told that if he put washers to separate the wastegate from the flange/manifold/what have you, that it would allow better performance from your wastegate. Anybody hear of something like this, or can anyone explain to me if this is legit and should it work on a T2?

I dont think that could work because a wastegate releases boost presure so you dont overboost. i dont think it even gives any horespower.
