Warning: Bad MOPs eat ECUs
Warning: Bad MOPs eat ECUs
I have to believe that this information exists somewhere else on this the forum, but I can't find any mention of it.
While searching for a remanufactured ECU I came across this page (not Firefox-friendly). Since this is likely just what happened to my ECU I thought I'd pass along the information.
Essentially what it means is don't install a metering oil pump without checking the stepper motor windings for shorts first.
I can't vouch for the veracity of the parts supply situation they describe and I'm not shilling for the vendor. It just seems like something useful to know.

OK, now I am shilling for the vendor.
N370 ECUs are pretty hard to come by and I didn't want to spend days haunting the forum, waiting for one posted for sale, then try to be the first to reply. Once I determined that my other possibly ECU-related problem was actually defective wiring I decided that having AvPro in FL repair my MOP driver was the most reasonable alternative available to me. They provide same-day turn-around. I sent my ECU from SoCal via USPS Priority Mail on a Friday and had it back, repaired, the following Wednesday.
Given the prices they usually go for on the forum it probably isn't worth paying $210 (includes return shipping) to repair most S4/S5 ECUs, but if a bad MOP driver is your problem and you decide to fix instead of replace, AvPro is the place to go. They require a money order as payment, so dealing with them is more of a leap of faith than with most on-line vendors, but from my experience, they are trustworthy.
