Video of the GTUs on the Dyno!

Yo,

Here ya go:

http://www.osdesigns.com/videos/dyno...02/12_dyno.mov

Supah massive props to Forum Member Voodoracing who took the video and edited it.

You can't see the flames, but the backfires are...loud.

If you wondering what the Racing Beat downpipe with HKS 50mm exhaust sounded like at 8400 rpm...now you know. It sounds /good/!!

All you folks who wanted to see what my dyno graph looked like, you can see it for a bit...

Hope you like it!

Dude thats a sweet S. Looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. About the wheels...I take it theyre powerdercoated? Any reason you chose not to stick witht eh stock center caps? I sorta like those, if you repaint them with gunmetal wheelpaint.

Im the dude who's gonna rebuild and repaint groundzero's GTUs in case youre wondering. I think he said he talked to you about your wheels, and pictures of something he wanted to see? Hopefully his will turn out just as clean as yours. ITs gonna be a bone stock rebuild with only a exhaust upgrade, ad stock red paint(just like yours).

BTW< nice dyno runs. The cold air intake and (I assume from the sound of it) midpipe your only mods? I imagine my old GTU would have made a similar run, it had those mods and ran mint. I could run with stock turbos with that car, I wish I hadnt sold it. ITs the one in my sig. I have a t2 project right now.

Yo,

Thanks for the compliments! I try and keep the car looking good and running good.

The rims are the stock 16" meshies, powdercoated white. The reason I didn't paint the wheelcovers white, and stick them on is because...I think they're kinda cheezy. Before I had the rims powdercoated, I did repaint the wheelcaps silver and use them. They looked good, because the fake chrome lugnuts kind of matched the rim. Now that the rims are white, the center can be taken off, because the lighter white rim can get away with it.

Take a look:

I think the effect is pretty cool. I went a step further and painted the axlenuts black, then purchased black lugnuts. You can see them here:

You can also see why having white mesh rims are NOT for the faint of heart. They're a nightmare to keep clean.

Goodluck with the GTUs project, the car is worth restoring and keeping alive. The GTUs is a very focused car, especially when you drive it. I put "100% fat free" in my sig sometimes, and it comes down to that. I dig it!

Yo,

Well, believe it or not, on the last Doc Wong outing, I had a chance to look at my car with an FD parked right behind. And you know what I thought?

"Damn, my car looks /good/."

*grin* FC's have that angular thing going on, the same way FD's have the curvey thing going on. I'm not going to take the plunge and say FC's look better than FD's, but they look good! I still have to say Series 5 tailights are the coolest ever designed by man. *grin*

Yo,

Yep, that's around 8400-8500rpms. With NA, you gotta /spin/ those triangles!! *grin*

I really think my exhaust is about perfect sounding. Loud at WOT, but not that tinny chain-saw sound.

Glad you all liked it!

Yo,

I should really come up with a form on this I can copy and paste. *grin*

Basically, Mazda dominated the IMSA GTU series in the 1980's, so much so that they got bored and tried GTO. To celebrate that dominance, then came up with the GTUs model in 1989 and 1990. Kind of like a Homogolation Special. The little "s" is very important, not to be confused to the GTU model.

The car has been called "The Turbo without the Turbo" and rightfully so: both the TII and GTUs share the same 16" mesh wheels, 4 piston aluminum brakes, aluminum hood (sans scoop), LSD and stiffer suspension/thicker swaybars. But the GTUs got rid of many of the "luxury" or "unecessary" features for the sake of weight reduction and purity of purpose.

They deleted the following:

Sunroof
Power windows
Power door locks
Tilt wheel mechanism
Map pockets
Leather seats
Rear wiper
Air conditioning

If it didn't make the car go faster, or handle, they chucked it. Air conditioning was available as an option.

The car weighs 2802 pounds, vs. the TII's 2987 pounds. The GTUs has a special 4.30 rear end vs. the normal 4.10 that most NA RX-7's came with. This was to get quicker acceleration times and has become very desirable, even for the Turbo guys.

The car came in three colors: Noble White, Blaze Red, and Brilliant Black. The black being the least common color, then the red, then finally the white. The black and red came with black interior, the white with dark blue.

They produced approximately 900-1100 GTUs in 1989, and a verified 100 in 1990. This makes the GTUs the rarest U.S. RX-7 model produced, even rarer than the 1500 10th Anniversary TII's they made in 1988.

Phew! That's about it for now. Hope that helped!

Yo,

I agree completely. Whenever I see a "I want clear tailights!" thread, I can't believe it. The S5 tailights are the sh*t.

Yo,

I see how it is! All the turbo guys jump my sh*t. Same culprits too. No love for the NA! *snicker* Oh well, the jealousy is apparent.

I can tell you it doesn't take that long to rev up there on the street, just when spinning big heavy rollers. A lightened flywheel should help.
