the kirk racing bar is ok

I plan on buying it and modding it to fit better than it does out of the box. I don not like my seat to sit as far forward as the kirk bar makes it sit. But for the price you can' beat it.

I've thought about that myself. I think the Kirk ones are ugly. The miata roll bars seem to be more stylish and safer.

the miata bars are they sell on ebay are just for looks. They are not a real roll bar and if you did roll that POS would be what kills you.

I suggest you buy and install the kirk bar, then chop it and design what ever loop idea you want but atleast add a third leg back supporting the hoop. This will be the most effective/cost effective way to safely do it right.

We have started work on a vert roll bar it is made of .083 DOM chromemoly or .120 mild steel. It uses 1"5/8 tubing and will be NHRA legal for verts with the door bars. It will also allow verts to run at track days. If ya'll are looking for a real roll bar tell me what other features you would like and I'll see if we can work them in. The bar will fit under the top and the top will go down with the bar installed as long as the targa part is removed.

Chris,

Yes I've though about this pretty thoroughtly, and if I was making them:

1) Styling follows the body lines so the bar looks good both in the car and with the top down (unlike the KIRK bar).
2) Styling is decent looking - no square bends, nice & fluid, follows around headrest (double bubble look)
3) Serves as chassis reinforcement by linking the floor, sides, and subframe rails
4) Offered in Dark Chrome Finish (dissapears) or Bright Chrome (accents car)
5) Larger tube diameter for better looks but lightweight enough not to add too much weight.
6) Mandrel bends
7) Doesn't interfear with the seatbelts
8) Doesn't interfear with seat adjustability (for taller drivers)
9) Offers real rollover protection
10) Some type of rotary engraving / design big enought to be seen in pictures.

I wouldnt buy a ebay roll bar. I would look at one from Hard Dog or another company. Right now i'm just looking at getting one custom built.

Ive put a dozen or more hard dog bars in miatas and i love them. Very good quality. I want a bar that is SCCA legal, but will let the top go up and down. If it has door bars i would like them to be removeable. I would also like a harness bar for attatching a 3" 5 point harness. I would also like it very soon, i dont feel that comfortable driving convertibles without roll bars.

I just looked at the style bar that kirk makes. I hate when people refference a bar that is quote "not rollover protection" as a roll bar. Kirk is a thumbs down. Hell, id rather have the autopower bar, and i really dont like autopower.

The A-pillar is stronger on the vert than the coupe. Strong enough to support the car if it rolls.
Good enough for everyday driving but I've seen Jesse drive!!! JK man, how do you like the car so far?

I have tried to find SCCA rollbar rules but the ones I found are very vague. I think the NHRA cage will pass the SCCA tech but if you have a good copy of the rules I would like to see them. We mostly drag race so I'm more familiar with NHRA safety rules than SCCA. The door bars will be an add on and not come with the rear 4 point. Most people don't want the hassle of a door bar in their daily driver plus the cars have crash bars in them from the factory. The bar will have a seatbelt bar but it will most likely make the spare tire well unuseable with the roll bar installed.

The problem I have with the Kirk bar is the placement shortens the seat adjustment by about 2 inches. For me, that would make driving the 'vert very uncomfortable.

We are almost done with the vert roll bar. The both seats have full movement with the seat belt bar installed. It is made of 1 5/8 .134 DOM steel and mounts into the car with 6x6 .125 plates on the top and bottom of the floor pan bolted with 4, 3/8 grade 8 bolts and nuts (NHRA rules). We will be removing the bar from the test car and building a jig for production in the next week. I'm looking for test cars that can come to the shop and have the bar installed so we can make sure there are no problems with the fit into other cars. Please PM or email me at Chris@SneedSpeedShop.com if you are interested in helping us out. All the bars will be painted high gloss black with high strength paint.

Thanks

Chris
