Smile Vert reviews wanted!

Hey guys, I'm about to sell my shitbox (see sig) and get an FC, its a 90 Vert with 130k chassis miles and 6k on a rebuild. The owner said it might be streetported because the company that he got it from usually street ports their motors. Everything works great and body is in great condition:

It has a racing beat cat-back and downpipe. I'll be getting it for 3k. I've searched for everything I'll need to check. Not really buying this car for straightline performance but does anyone know what the car would run in the 1/4? Just curious, I'll be picking it up next Sunday depending on the reviews I get here. So far I love the platform, parts are cheap and the cars are actually fun to drive (unlike my old car). I'd like to hear some reviews from Vert owners, how do you guys like the car? I see that its very heavy, but again I'm not looking to get a 12 second ET, just something with enough peppines for daily driving and fun in the corners. Is the Vert's handling much different from the average GXL/GTU?

Thanks a lot for the help

Thumbs up

yea man that vert is damn nice, and for 3k its a freaking bargin. I got my vert for 5k with 116k on the motor and chassie. i like it though, a little too much body roll but it's still fun to take turns in it. with a rebuilt engine and street ported i think you should get it. You won't be disappointed!!!

Sounds a little fishy. Where did he get the rebuild from? See if he has any paperwork on the rebuild. Engine builders street port as an option for an additional cost. If he paid for a rebuild but didn't pay an extra couple hundred bucks for porting then I highly doubt its ported.

Verts are sweet, I love mine! Buy it and drive it like you stole it!

He said his friend got his motor rebuilt for him and it pulls a lot harder than it used to. Doesn't matter though, I would buy the car either way.

i work at a landfill and i just weighed my S5 vert yesterday

3220 with me in it 190lbs, half a tank of gas, and subwoofer(30lbs), and a bunch of other crap in the trunk and in the front

around 3000lbs which isnt bad at all

considering some uneducated idiots will tell you that the GVW is 3400lbs, which is one with a full tank of gas and two passengers

Verts are fun *** cars, they have style and class, and they handle like no other convertable ive ever seen

you will not regret getting that car for 3K, its a good deal, as long as everything is in runnin condition

I just picked up my vert last weekend and it's been great so far. It's definitely not the fastest car out there but it is fun to drive. I'm pretty addicted to the sound of the rotary now.

I think it would definitely benefit a lot from a shorter final drive and LSD. Is that difficult to do?

I've owned a fiew FC's. I LOVE my vert. It isn't a rocket, but that's balanced out when you cruise with the top down. And, oh ya, a set of springs and shocks/struts make a world of difference in the corners. Not my place to tell you how to spend your money, but I am definitly NOT mad that I bought mine! Car looks sweet. Enjoy!

The vert is just a turbo away from being rediciously fast and it handles. Personally I would not even own a second gen unless it was a turbo vert. When I started my build I wanted a vert that handled great, was extremely fast, and did not break the bank to get into. So even now that I am around 15-18k into it that still is better than other 400+ hp convertibles out on the market now. The closest you can get it a vert jag for about 22k but thats a auto.

I would say pass on this vert if I were you. One its auto and you are going to get real tired of that slowness real quick, and second the owner os feeding you a line of bs on the porting. You want at least a 5 speed.

I do also have a chance to get an 88 GXL but I prefer the looks of the S5. And I'm not buying it because its streetported, that was just something the guy mentioned on the phone saying that the car felt faster than it used to with the old motor.

And yes, it is a 5 speed.

LoL, that auto shifter sure looks different than the auto shifter my vert used to have.

The car looks like a pretty good deal to me. Except for the questionable ported engine, but its still a deal without porting. Just swap in a ported turbo engine and you will know for sure you have a ported engine!

Turbo vert FTW!

damn after a closer look I retract that auto statement.... I just saw how the shifter had that curved handle and those are usually found on autos.

At any measure I would have a compression test done and I would suggest asking the seller to have it looked at by Brett DePedro over at Rotary Perfomance in Manassas.
Thats right around the way from your house. 9 times out of 10 they have already worked on theis car, And if the seller says no then walk.
