Vert Question- What is that cloth thing on the back?

Dude what is that cloth cover over the vert stuff and where do I get it?
It folds over an obviously goes over those bolt nuts that I see and dont understand what they are there for.

I think it came with every vert to cover up folded tops. Top does not folds over those bolts/nuts b/c those are used to attach the cover.

It is the regular tonnue cover for the convertible top. Mazda recommends that it is installed over the convertible top when ever the top is lowered, but in reality I normally only use it when I am driving for long periods of time with the top down.

If you do not have one (they all came with one), then they pop up on Ebay from time to time.

The top boot (I believe that's the correct name) is IMHO primarily an appearance item, though it could be argued that it keeps the top from flipping up when the car is at high speeds. Note: I've never had that problem, but lawyer-types might consider it.

The stock one is obscenely priced at $923.70. I went to my local upholstery shop and had a custom one made for $155. It did not have the "padded collar" that makes the stock one so bulky, but it looked nice and fulfilled the same function.

There's a company selling what they claim are convertible boots modeled on the original boot. You might give them a call.

I've owned 2 verts and only 1 came with this

and it won't attach anyways since the top got replaced and they didn't use the proper fastening hardware

Every once in a while one of these will pop up in the parts for sale section. I got a MINT(seriously looks and feels brand new) one for $150 shipped! I have yet to use it, but I can't wait! LoL

Terrh, wow that sucks dude. Maybe you can sell it to Dltreezan since you can't use it?

Yeah I highly doubt that would ever happen. The targa section has some decent weight to it. When the top is fully down the angle the targa section sits at makes it pretty hard for air to get under it and flip it up, especially with the windblocker up too.

Oh by the way, thread title asks what the cloth thing is on the back. The OEM one I got is vinyl with a cloth underside. There may be cloth replacements though.

It is also commonly called a boot cover, and that is easier for me to spell.

If you are patient, you can pick one up on the F/S section of this board or ebay for $100 or so. Wait for one that is represented as perfect, with all the snaps.

During the winter months, I seldom take my boot cover off or raise the top. Car lives in the garage and unless it's raining, the top stays down. I only take it off for summer months and A/C use. My boot cover seldom goes on in summer because I may drive in the morning with the top down and in the afternoon when it gets hot the top goes right up.

I like those.. it gives the vert a more clean look when you have the top down. I dont see how the top would fly up without it though unless you were really short and sat really close to the steering wheel. Im 5'8 and with the way I have the seat adjused, it would definitly hold the top back from flying up unless it broke in half.
