'Vert or Coupe?

Well, chances are i'll be getting my FC very soon. There are tons of convertible FCs all over autotrader.com, but not as many coupes. I wouldn't mind getting either, though it seems 'verts are more available. Now, my question to you all is what are some MAIN differences, other than the obvious. The car will be mostly a daily driver, but I might take it down to Virginia International Raceway every so often if I get the chance.

I know the coupe is lighter, but is that the only big difference? I have a feeling the 'vert would get me more hunnies, but i'd have more fun driving the coupe. Any 'vert owners who previously owned coupes? Or vice versa? Opinions are more than welcome (coupe vs. 'vert). I know there have probably been threads on this before, so I do apologize if this would qualify as a repost.

Thanks In Advance.

I own both. Verts seem to come with automatics more often. Makes them much slower. But, man nothing compares with driving the vert in the summer, I love that car. Plus with the automatic I can enjoy my favorite adult beverage.

How about performance? Can you feel much of a diff. between your coupe and your vert? Obviously the 'vert is heavier, but does it really make that big of a difference?

I'd say go coupe for performance, like if you want to autoX at all, and get the vert if you want to have a nice cruiser.
Personally I much prefer the coupe.

'verts have more passion (and women do like that), but the coupes are better day to day drivers.

While the coupes usually have a better weight to HP ratio, the 'verts have better handling. I know of a couple 'vert owners that do autoX, but none that track race.

So it really is a toss up. You'll have to drive each to see which one fits what you want better.

I have had both, 2 coupes and 1 vert. Above all, make sure it is a 5 speed. Secondly if you don't want a turbo II because it is your daily driver then go with a vert. I would never trade my vert for a non-turbo coupe, but I would trade it for a turbo II. No matter which car you get you will want more power. So:
1. Turbo (if you have the money to make reliable, and can find one)
2. Vert
3. Coupe
4. A different kind of car.
5. An Auto FC.

Where are you at in VA?

Depending on where you live is how I would assertain which car you choose. If you live in an urban area, for your own wallets sake, avoid a vert. Why? Because they'll slash through your top to get loose change. Same goes for having any plans for a stereo or anything nice in the car...

If you live in the sticks, then get a vert...or if you live and work in nice areas, it's an open choice...

The tops don't come cheap.

I get more girls asking for rides with my 'vert than any other car I have ever driven. They come walking up to me and ask "what kinda car is that" and then want a ride (in the car lol). I have lightened mine so there is no performance difference, and let me tell you this is the most fun car you will ever own. I wish I could have two of them, a red one and a blue one!! You will never regret buying a 'vert, and i will NEVER sell mine.

Between an N/A and a vert. I will keep my vert. It handles like it is on rails. Almost as good as my 85 SE.
And it is a chick magnet. The styling and uniqueness of the car make the design timeless. No one says nice car for being so old.

I've had seven rx-7s and they were all fun, especially the TII. The one I'm keeping however, is my vert. Before I drove a vert I didn't think much of them, driving and owning one has changed my mind about them. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who thinks they handle great. I think like most things, it's all a matter of personal preference.

No such thing as an 89 SE.

But back on topic, I had a convertible for about a week, couldn't deal with it after having three coupes. Felt way too heavy.

I live in Northern VA (Manassas). Depending on where you go, the crime level varies. The neighborhood I live in has had hardly any problems as far as theft. Other parts of town, however, do but I'm not often over there. Sounds like the 'vert would be a good choice.

Are 5-speed verts hard to find? Because I know how to drive a 5-spd but I have an auto. and i've wanted a 5-spd for a while now.

As far as inside the car, the only real mod i'll probably do is a CD player. Maybe seats after I do some performance mods.

Chances are I won't be getting a TII because
a) seem fairly rare around here
b) insurance
c) reliability (it is a daily driver, after all)

General consensis seems to be to get a 'vert over an NA coupe. Thanks a lot guys. It's much appriciated. I'll have the car by summer time too, so it's not like i'll have to wait to drop the top.

Get a 'vert, swap in the TII drivetrain and engine... the best of all worlds. I'm halfway there.

I love my 'vert more than any car I've ever driven. Coupes are faster, but speed isn't everything.

I gotta add my 2 cents. I had a TII several years back, and found it a bit hard to live with. I'll get flamed big time for this, but I replaced it with an Eagle Talon Tsi turbo AWD which I liked much better. About a month ago, I picked up a vert fairly cheap, and I absolutely love it. I wish it went faster in a straight line, but unlike the buckboard ride of the TII this has the ride/handling balance of a Porsche 944 (I've had 2) and the top down experience is wonderful. Amazingly tight and rattle-free for a 15 year old ragtop (love that Targa panel), and I think the convertible is much nicer looking than the coupe to boot. In short, GET THE VERT!!!!!!

why do verts handle better than coupes?

I never would have thought that.

Hey, thanks for telling me what car I don't have

There are 89 SE's in Canada, which is where I live, and I have one, so it does exist.

My SE:
No power anything
No storage bins
Single piston calipers
originally 15" stamped steel wheels
Dealer installed options at the time of purchase... of rear spoiler, and slotted mirrors
kind of 8/10ths a GTUs

actually much closer to a 89-90 GTU, than a GTUs
