Value of S4 TII?

I have a chance at getting a 1987 Mazda RX-7 Turbo 2 for $500. It supposedly needs a clutch, mufflers, tires, and some work to the brakes. It has a 8/98 inspection sticker and the owner says it hasn't been started for like 5 years, so I will need to prime the oil system. It has 95xxx miles on the odometer.
The paint is beatiful and the body is dent free, the interior is probably average condition...it has seat covers and cracked stereo surround. The car has a spoiler, 4-16" turbo 2 wheels, and a moonroof. The car is complete, not a part removed, i'm just wondering if I buy this car and later have to sell it could I get my money back, I would probably part it out. I want to get a clutch out of a wrecked car (much cheaper), as well as tires and possibly the mufflers. Isn't the engine alone worth $500? thanks guys,
Zach
BTW the car is very beatiful especially from the back!!!

Yes it's worth that, the tranny/rear-end/turbo alone would be worth that much.

i wouldn't hesitate if i were in your position, in fact i would be at the bank getting the money to hand it to him as soon as i could. i paid $1300 for a non running '87 T2, i probably paid a little too much but i still am happy i got the car. it was off an ebay auction btw.

Chryst dude..... if everything is nice as you say it is.... I will hunt you down, throw a Ted Nugent bolo snare on your *** and stomp on your nuts if you buy that car and part it out....

Getting a junkyard clutch is also just plain stupid...

The engine is going to need rebuilt...

take a loan out for 2 grand, buy the car, have the mtor rebuild and put a decent clutch in it and you have a 3500-4000 car...

However, Please... if you are going to do everything half assed.. don't buy the poor thing

sorry man, i've only made $2000 so far in my entire life, and only have $600 in the bank, plus my 1985 Mazda RX-7 GS w/ 12a ($500). I'll do what I can, but i'm not going to waste my money...for example, why would I rebuild the engine? Cause it sat for 5 years? My 12a sat for almost 7 years and after a carb changeover it fired up and runs into the red almost everyday. Alright I'll trust you SonicRat, that's what it looks like from ebay and the for sale section here as well. I just hope I can buy it before this other guy does. Wish me luck.

Clutch...$500...Tires....$600....exhaust....$500.. ...other things $500

So you'll have $2500 into it if the engine is good.

But you know S4Tll's don't come along every day!!!!

Feel lucky? Throw the dice.

I dunno what you guys are on, but a clutch shouldn't cost anywhere NEAR 500.. A quick jot over to advanceauto's website showed that for a turbo they were between 122-150. Exhaust you can have one made fairly cheaply locally, then save up for a while to buy a name brand if you need/want to.

You're definatly going to have about $150 dollars in just getting it started properly, though. you need new belts, fluids, rubber hoses, vacuum lines, etc. The little stuff will add up, and make sure you check your brakes!

Oh, and GET IT ALREADY! STOP READING THIS THREAD AND GO GIVE THE GUY YOUR MONEY!!!!

Cut him some slack, he's only been 16 for about 6 months.. It's hard as hell to find a job when you're under 18 anymore.

hey wonkothesane how did you know i'm only 16? But yes this is why. I did "buy" the car already. I need to go pay him probably tomorow but i'm having the vin checked for good measure. How should I get the car home? My stepdad said he would pull it with his 2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS, but we both only have tow hooks, no hitch. I've heard of running a chain thru a length of pipe, but is this legal? will it mess up anything? could i use pvc plastic pipe to prevent damage to the body? thanx, BTW I started a new thread...just "bought" S4 TII

could i use that duralast clutch from autozone? I do drive pretty hard, but i try to minimize clutch slippage and syncro usage. I won't really have super sticky tires on there, and only racing is a little autocrossing. thanks

I knew you were 16 from your profile (if you click on someone's name, there's an option to "view public profile"). Either way, for towing it... I'd probably slip a tow truck driver a 40 bucks, and see if he'll do it.. call around, if it's not that far of a distance, it won't be that expensive to get it towed, especially if you can say "Eh, no rush, do it on the way back from another job in the area..". It's when you need emergency towing RIGHT NOW that gets pricey. most of the guys are cool and will work with you. I don't recommend towing it home with a chain/rope/etc. You will most likely damage either your new TII or your dad's Impreza.. neither is a good choice. The only way I'd tow it is if I had less than 1 mile to go, and it was all back roads.

I use the clutch from advanced in my 86 N/A, I forget the name, but it was a kit. I autocross, but don't drag in it. I don't drive like a granny either. I think it cost 135 two years ago or something like that. Either way, it will work for at least two years, and hopefully you'd have a bit more money for a better one if you need it then.

Good luck.

yo, your 23 right? nice website by the way, and very cool paint on the 86 gxl. I also have an 85 GS, i'm gonna sell it so i can fix up the TII. good idea with that type of towing, i'll see what i can do, the car is mostly backroads and about 9 minutes away. But it has old tires, they luckily don't look to dryrotted and if they hold air then I'll take it home, besides all the way home is only 40 mph speed limit. tnx
