Using a S5 block in an S4?

I've got an S5 engine, would there be any problems using this in an S4? The housings look pretty much the same but, I'm not sure if I'll run into anything unknown.

Your input is appreciated

I am about to do this conversion this week. As far as I know, if you use the S4 bolt ons, like the UIM and LIM, TB and all that. ITs pretty much a bolt in deal.. Oh, and you gotta use S4 injectors.

More to come as I do the swap.

Well I've just got then engine block.... none of the manifolds or external stuff. I had orginaly bought the engine for the rotors and flywheel.

So without the external stuff is it still possible to use this engine with the S4 manifolds?

I just don't wanna start cleaning this thing then find out i wasted all that time. Cleaning the housings is the part I like least of doing the rebuild. I'd rather be porting!

Well, like I said. I am going to be starting this swap in about 3 days. Streetported S5 into an 87 N/A. I will be more then happy to post a play-by-play.

It's pretty much a bolt on as long as you use the S4 intakes, sensors and other electrics (including injectors). However, I believe the water temp sensor has different threads between the S4 and S5, and there is some slight grinding on the block necessary to fit the intake manifold (it will be obvious).

Grinding????? I know you have to to fit an S5 intake on an S4 because of clearance isses. Why the griding to fit an S4 on an S5?

I was gonna use the S4 Water pump, should this take care of the mismatch thread issues w/the sensor?

And as far as grinding the block... I can't quite picture what you meant. I'll go take a look at it a bit later.

Yeah, sorry. The grinding is needed when putting an S5 intake on a S4 blcok, not the other away around. My mistake (wasen't thinking when I posted it).

I'm pretty sure that by "grinding" he means port matching of the manifolds. They are not identical in shape and size. You don't HAVE to do this, but if you have the means, I'd recommend it.

I recently did this swap (though with an S5 TII into an S4).

If you have the S5 block, you probably have the water temp sensor, but the thing you may not have is the connector. You need to hit the junkyard and find the right one. One of them has round connector, while the other is a typical blade connector, you just want to make sure you get the right one and splice it into your harness.

done it before, injectors are different that's it...everything else is bolt in, oh you have to change the front cover s5 uses electronic metering pump or you set it on the s5 cover think it will leak a little oil had that problem

Well in conclusion putting a S5 block into a S4 is simple.

Transfer over the front plate to keep the S4 OMP. Manifolds bolt up no problems. One thing to rember is the difference from an S4 to S5 water level sender connector (not really a problem), one being a blade connector the other a bullt type. Also you can optionaly port match the manifolds while eveything is apart.

Well sounds good! Very informative thanks much guys!
