used j-spec engines ... a go or hell no ?
im thinking about ordering a j-spec S5 13bt . corksport and nippon-motors sell them for $900 plus shipping . corksport doesnt offer a warranty but nippon motors does but i think its only a gurantee that it'll start and run . they are supposed to have less then 30-40k on it , and they inspect the engine . should i go for it ? does anyone have any horror stories about this ?
I have had mixed luck with them. Some are exactly as described. Most are not.
The thing you must remember is that although the supposedly have less than 40k on them, 40k in Japan is like 80k here in the States. There is almost no Interstate highway roads like you would find here, so the majority of the driving is city or slightly rural.
IMO: They are great if you are going to keep the car less than 1 year, or want to use them as a probably good core to rebuild (thats what I did on my 'vert conversion, rebuilt the Jspec before putting it in).

I had pondered the same thing, and been about everywhere looking for one for my 85 12A conversion to Cosmo 13b-RE... I called www.corksport.com and was treated, well what I call treated, badly...
They acted like here it is if you dont like it tough ****! I personally know of 3 people, inclusive of myself, that have gotten Jspec engines here lately, and to tell the truth Im very satisified. But remember its a used motor and thats what you get. But for 1) I have never seen a used motor as clean as this one, 2) it had everything on it
, and 3) has good compression on all sides of the rotor... Oh by the way only place that offers a warranty on Jspec's is www.fc3s.org I HIGHLY , HIGHLY recommend them over anyone else. Before my purchase, Dave even called me personally and answered my questions 100%, and never was a HO HUM not that stupid question again attitude... He was very professional, I got what was described to me, and actually received 2 days before I was told it was gonna be here...
Good luck...
