useable rotor???

Hi all, I am in the process of rebuilding my engine right now. I had a blown apex seal in the rear rotor. Now, There is a little wear in one of the apex grooves near the edge but the rest seam fine. There are quite a few small dings on the faces of the rotor and one pretty large one, where I assume the broken apex seal got swept by and drug against the housing. I was wondering since the seals hold in all of the compression, would the rotor be ok to use, or would the dings deem it unuseable? I tried to sand everything flush so nothing would wear against the housing, but I am just a little paranoid about using it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Aaron

As long as there isn't a hole in the face of the rotor, it will be fine, but for any sort of damage to the apex seal area, I would replace it just to be safe. Got any pics of the rotor?

i just got some pics, will try and get them up asap. I tried to get some shots of the apex groove area but I don't know exactly how well they'll turn out.

if the edge is worn then you could mill them to 3mm if they're not too bad.

I already have all the 2mm seals and the rebuild kit so I don't wanna have to go through the trouble of going to 3mm.

measure them per the shop manual and if they're within specs, then it should be good. you should post a pic to get better responses though.

often when the three peice seals let go, its because of the apex seal slot in the rotor becoming wider at the top of the rotor and the seal rolls out.

You need to double check that the slot on the rotor has not become a V shaped opening.

the slot is only v-ed slightly on the very end of one of the grooves, for only a couple mm's. I will try to get the pics up so you guys can see what I mean.

In the first pic, the dings in the face of the rotor don't look bad. There was a thread a little while back where someone asked if it was ok to use a rotor with a similary dented face. As long as nothing is sticking out to where it will hit the rotor housing, and there are no holes going through the rotor into the oil chamber, then it can be used. The shape change in the shape will not change the compression so much that it will harm performance. FSM says that compression between the front and rear rotor shouldn't be more than 21psi from each other.

Looks like it is a little wide but usable, don't worry about dings. I have used worse and still running and abusing them...

Take one of your new apex seals and put it in each groove. You shouldnt be able to move them side to side at all...it should move freely up and down with little to no drag, but should not be loose at all either. IT is all about the groove the seal sits in. Too little clearance and the seal will bind and not make full compression, and later heat stress will crack and break it. Too much clearance and the seal can rock back and forth, and break pretty soon.

I put the seal in the groove, and it doesn't move side to side at all... there is actually a little drag in there. The only part where the seal isn't completely butted up against that groove, is for like 2mm near the very end of the groove. I'll try and post the straight on pic if the forum will let me...

Thanks all for you input!
