Some J-Spec models did some with a 4.30 rear, but most people don't call it "lower".

Dunno...

Old time lister from TeamFC3S / fc3s_org mailing list used to complain his flying mile maxed out at around 150mph, redline 5th gear on an S4...from NZ.
It wasn't an Infini model, and he swears the driveline wasn't molested.
It could've been possible the entire diff was changed out...hmmm...

S4 FC turbo 5th gear + 4.10 rear = about 165mph at redline in 5th

only the Infini models got the 4.300 rear end.
all FC supposedly had steel hoods, with the exception of the Infini models.
all FC were 4seater, with the exclusion of the Infini models.

GT-R is the base model (no sunroof)
GT-X is the middle model (no sunroof)
GT-Limited is the fully loaded model (like our USDM TurboII)
GT-Limited Special is the fully loaded model (like our leather equipped USDM TurboII)
Cabriolet is the convertible (obviously) turbo
no NA models were sold in Japan

the bottom line:
the car is basically the same. with the exception of a few minor differences.

An FC with the USDM 0.762:1 5th gear and a 4.1:1 diff with reach 157mph @ 7000rpm (assuming stock-diameter tires).

An FC with the JDM 0.806:1 5th gear and a 4.1:1 diff with reach 149mph @ 7000rpm. That's most probably what he had.

Nope, mine's aluminium. AFAIK Japan got a similar mix of steel and aluminium hoods as the US.

mazda is a fun company

mazda makes cars they want to that day
hoods
interior color
odd options like that were not model spec

i checked the thread because we noticed the wiring for the rear speakers was different and had a different connector. seemed odd theres small little stuff like that everywhere . i think it has a lot to do with the fact that they dont make all the cars the same for any model for any market . i have mazda trucks same year same model different rear springs and drive shaft carrier . miatias have oddities like that as well . and our beloved 7 , they made them every witch a way . mine is a 89 GT-R and it seems to be as described above , a base model turbo , no sun roof , but it has , rear wiper , power windows , power door locks i think , it has some sort of folding or break away mirror,

oh my point was mazda is kinda small
and 7 s are not hi volume so mazda buys small numbers of stuff ,builds cars , and orders more , so i belive our cars vary due to parts constantly being ordered in segments less than production .so the parts vary from order to order and mazda just goes with it . fun right , were supposto be having fun here ?
any way
my 2 cents again

another question, was the base model (GT-R) 4 or 5-lug? or was US the only country to have a 4-lug FC?

They were all 5-lug with the "hard" suspension and "big" brakes.
Only stupid U.S. consumers were given the option of the cheaper 4-lug Zenki non-turbo models. :P
Majority of the FC's in Japan came with 15" wheels though...all the US-Spec FC turbos were 16" standard wheels.

While electric folding mirrors are very common in Japan, I'm pretty sure FC's never had them. I've never seem them anyway, and nearly all the FC's in NZ are Japanese imports. They collapse backwards if you hit them from the front and you have to push them back into place, they're not spring loaded. They don't collapse forwards though, so hit 'em hard from behind and you'll be minus a mirror...

Australia spec FCs have the shorter vert taillights (our plates are bigger) and all (NAs and turbos) have 5 lug hubs and 4 pot brakes. Mind you there are so many Jap imports driving around our streets anyway these days the FCs you will usually see on the road aren't Australian.

i know most jspec cars have mirrors that fold, most are also electronically doen. they have a little motor in there and a switch in the cockpit that folds them in, I'm not sure aobut FCs ,but I have heard rumor of them. I personally have never seen them. But it wouldn't matter cuz I'm rocking the RE Amemiya mirrors now.

well besides that he wasn't talking about the US

The base model was the SE only on the 87.5 and 88 models in the USA.

The 86-87 base model (called just the RX-7) and the 86-87 Luxury also came with the 4 lug wheels in the USA.

Many Japanese-market cars have electrically folding mirrors but FC's are not one of them. All Japanese FC's got the same mirrors, and all they can do is collapse backwards.

Not sure why they did it, more cost cutting I guess
I wonder if they moved the hatch light so that it would be below the cargo cover (if so equipped)? Cargo covers were only offered on the S5s right?
