Exclamation Urgent!!! How can a rebuild sit before use?

I just checked the dates on the rebuild plate attached to the engine and the tag on the shipping container.

It says " July 25, 2001" !!!

This is a Mazda North America Operations (MNAO) rebuild for a 89-91 engine replacement.

Now I'm worried

All you 'rebuilders' out there, What do you think?

well if the engine was well lubricated and turned over once in awhile...you have nothing to worry about. Aircraft engines sit at times longer than 2 years and are in good shape.

Unfortunatly I doubt if this engine has ever been turned over since it was built! You know just sitting around in a crate...

Letting a regular, used rotary sit unused is a big no-no. This is because carbon will lock apex and other seals in place over time, adn then later on they'll either stick or bind and break after they're asked to run.

Letting a fresh, uninstalled rebuild sit is no problem. IN theory they have an infinite shelf life, provided theyre protected from humidity. There is no carbon or any other build up on the rotors, so the seals can not stick if no humidity is present to cause rust. I have, however, seen a few remans of old GSLSE engines that I took apart expecting to be like new, only to find rusted (lightly) rotors and stuck seals due to humidity over the years (these were probably sitting there 5+ years).

Bottom line, I wouldnt worry about it. Besides, it is a mazda motor, it is under warranty regardless.

Thanks Kevin!

And the rest of you guys too, I was a little worried when I saw the date.

I would rather of had my engine rebuilt then get a Mazda rebuild but the insurance company figured that
the cost to replace an endplate, rotor and house plus all of the seals, gaskets and labour to reassemble
was going to more then just ordering one up.

My thought was I know that the parts to be re-used from my engine have only 77,000km and there would be
no way to tell what milage the Mazda rebuild parts had on them This still has me a bit concerned.

In fact it looks like the front housing is a newer casting then the rear one I hope their rebuild specs are
tight, I really don't want to go through this again soon! At least I get a factory fresh flywheel and a new
waterpump out of the deal But now this makes me want to replace the clutch, Sheesh when will it end
