Unusual brand turbo

A bit of an unusual question here. A KKK brand A266 turbo off of a 1990 944 turbo has landed on my desk. I've seen this turbo push 18 pounds before it got rebuilt. The 944 has since found a new turbo - leaving me to wonder what amount of magic and money it would take to put this in my 87 TII. I know that many companies make T04 and other popular manifolds, but what options do I have? My turbo is having problems, so I'm thinking I might as well look into it. Any opinions?

Might be too small to bother, aren't the 944 turbos(951?) all 2ltr 4 bangers?

It's a 2.5 liter 4cyl. I'm not really sure how to tell if it's too small or not. I've seen it hold at 18 pounds, although I'd not really run that. Time to check google for some specs.

Flowrate is as important as pressure. A small turbo's 10psi will be less gainful than a big turbo's 10psi.

Either ask in the Single Turbo forum, or maybe post a compressor map, that would help with sizing.....

Oh yeah - I made a mistake on the turbo name - it's a KKK K26-6. Google says that KKK and Blitz both have a K26 - so maybe they're similar? Where might I find the map?

Also since you have it right there, just take some quick measurements for us.
Like compressor inducer/exducer size, what size the exhaust outlet is.

from the 944 turbo that I saw it is significantly smaller then the stock HT-18 Turbo. By significantly I mean 2/3 the size, so It would be not better than stock infact it would be worse!

I quiet certainly could be wrong on my thinking, but the 944 Turbo with an engine with a displacement (2.5L) that allows it to pump about the same amount of air as a 13B makes substantially more power and torque than a TII. Our stock turbos were not exactly the most efficient in their day (the S4 in particular). My point is I can't imagine it would be a downgrade. Then again if you're going to go to the trouble and expense of putting in a new turbo there are probably better options.

I could've sworn all factory 944 turbos were only 2ltrs? the N/A were finally a 2.6ltr after many changes..

sure this isn't an aftermarket turbo kit for an N/A 944?

If you give us some measurements we can probably tell you if its worth it or not. KKK do make some rather large turbos, 'K26's' came in many different sizes though....

so.. go get out that measuring tape

I asked my friend about it, and he bored out the 2.5 liter to a 3.0 4cyl and it wasn't the original K26 from the 944. The Audi S4 k26-6 is what I have here. I'll post the dimensions when I'm not running to class.

the S4 doesn't use those turbos. It might be a KKK turbo, but if it's called a K26-6 then it's not on an S4.

either way, if it was on a 2.5L 4-cylinder, you might be better off with two of them on your rotary, heh.

All 944s had the 2.5 ltr powerplant, the 2.8, or the 3.0. Even the turbo models had the 2.5 ltr.

Information taken from http://www.connact.com/~kgross/FAQ/944faq.html

As for the turbo from them, if I were going to use one, I'd get one from a 944 Turbo S. Seems to be a better unit.

OK - so I got it checked out. "The actual turbo is a KKK 2670 GGA. with a maximum airflow of about 35 lb/min (500 cfm) and capable of a pressure ratio of about 2.7 (25 psi). The Garrett that is most equivalent is the T04E-40. Major differences are that it spins at a higher rpm to make boost, and it has a much narrower efficiency zone."

This information was taken from http://gallery.rennlist.com/gallery/...cle_p1a?full=1 it's a scanned copy from a porche magazine on how to upgrade the turbo and what turbo came with it. I'm not sure what the flow and all that of the hitachi twin scroll is, but I'd still think it's under this.

So it has a T04ish compressor.... what size is the exhaust housing?

Or at least do you know what size the exhaust wheel is?
