uneven idle and power loss when cold

Hi,
I have a 1987 RX7 that I have owned since it was new. The car has 87,000 miles and the engine 37,000. After putting it on the road this year I noticed idling unevenly (up, then down) and while going through the gears, major power loss at about 4500 rpm. If the car is warm, this problem seems to disappear and she runs normally. I have had the plugs and wires replaced but my mechanic does not want to proceed with any more work until more information is available. He suggested I get some help here. Any suggestions as to solutions?
Thanks,
Ted

What kind of mechanic tells you to ask for information on the internet about a car in his shop?

I'd look for another wrench.

Sorry, I didn't explain that he thinks it might be some sort of sensor and he doesn't have any of the testing equipment. Before I try taking it to a dealer, who may have the necessary equipment I thought I might like to be armed with a little information
so it won't be so easy to rake me over the coals.

So that drop in power might not be related to the strange idling? It's just that I have never experienced that sort of ilde before and he has checked out all the obvious reasons. I am in Niagara Falls, N.Y. and we are unaware of any places that are experienced in the electronic end of the engine. He showed me an old book with diagrams showing the use of all kinds of testers, seemingly one for each gadget.
Thanks,
Ted

It does not solve the strange idling. Two seconds high-two seconds low, etc. This has never occured before, regardless of the ambient temperature or whether the car had just been started or not. Also, I should have been clearer: The temperature gauge indicates that the car is warm, but the problem would still occur until minutes later. Evidently, fully warming up is not truly indicated by the temperature gauge. Yes?
