ok so i got me a bomz racing cone instake filter, i start taking the stuff out of my 1988 NA Gxl, and theres the metal thing with wires sticking out and a flapper inside, at the bottum of the stock sqare filter, it looks like its for controlling the airflow but i though the throttle did that, what do i do? just put stock back on? i got a 1 hour and 30 mins before i got to go. can i just put the 3inch filter on and call it good and forget about the flapper thing! ah help me plz experts~

That's the AFM - And yes, you do need it. Unless you are running a standalone ECU (Which you are not) the car won't run without it. Because you have an S4, you will need an adaptor to make the round filter attach to the square AFM.
They look like this: (Rx7store.net (among others) sells them. It'll run about $15 - $20.)
You will also have to fab up a braket to hold the AFM in place (Level). A piece of metal bolted to the adapter and then the Car usually works.
For the Air pump go to a Pep Boys or something and buy a $5 Mini Breather style filter. Any Mechanical device that intakes air should have a filter on it.

Buy a breather filter at any autoparts store...

You can use a pair of old pantyhose and a good elastic band as a make-do filter for the airpump. Just make sure it's secure enough that it doesn't get sucked in.
