Uh.. i was sitting at the drive-thru
anyways i was sitting at the del taco drive thru and then my passenger is like there's smoke coming out of your car and i was like where? i looked down and it was coming from the shifter.... it was raining so maybe some water splashed up and hit the tranny so smoke went up it through the shifter or what?
Why is it that so many people confuse SMOKE with STEAM?
You see, steam is produced from water evaporating (vaporizing) at a high rate. Kinda like clouds in reverse. Steam doesn't smell bad cause it's just water.
Now smoke on the other hand, is something BURNING. It's usually oil, paint or wiring burning on a hot exhaust (usually the manifold) which produces noxious gasses (smoke). Just like what comes out of your bowl when you light it.
Exhaust fumes will get you high and eventually kill you if the concentrations are high enough. If your car is leaking enough exhaust into your car that you can SEE it, then you probably cant hear yourself think cause it'd have to have a serious hole/crack somewhere near the shifter. Not likely.
So, if the "smoke" coming up from the rotted shifter boot smelled horrible and made you roll the windows down then it's probably a problem. If the "smoke" didn't fill the car with an aweful stench (smell) and didn't get you high, then it's most likely just steam from wetting down the exhaust coming through the gutter into Del Taco.
Damn I need a macho nacho.

I was taking a friend for a quick run on the highway to show off my car at 14 psi at WOT, was just letting off on the throttle, and the smell of fuel permeated the cabin, just as he says "Hey, my feet are getting wet!" The fuel rail/FPR bolt was very loose and spraying fuel all over the turbo exhaust, and some got in through the firewall. Damn lucky I didn't need to use my fire extinguisher, just the cresent wrench I keep in the trunk. It melted his rubber flip/flops.
