thanks

well, the GXL is more of the luxury model of 2nd gens (86-91) leather, sunroof, cruise, etc...

the GSL is a model of 1st gen rx-7s...i think the GSL-SE is the real sporty one so GSL might be the middle model...

as for LX...there isn't one

for 2nd gens there are other models though
Turbo II's
GTU
GTUs
SE
BASE
Convertible

hope that helps...there a lot more info on those models...just do a search and you'll get some answers

Hehehe, ah yes, the little-known 87 models...

The LX (luxury coupe) was only made in 87, although I'm not sure what it had vs. the GXL. Also missing from Erik's list is the 87 Sport (base coupe with aero package). The 88 10th Anniversary is also considered a separate model from the regular TII.

The S, GS, GSL, GSL-SE, and Limited Edition models are all 1Gen cars.

I may have missed some models myself, though, as I didn't even know that the 87 Sport existed until my racing partner bought one. Hehehe, we were both thinking WTF?

Ok, what's the difference between the 87 sport and 87 GTU then?

I'm assuming the sport is not the GTU-s (if it was available in 87).

AND - is the 2+2 the same as the SE or was that a unique model as well?

Calm down guys, here's the ticket. Somebody save this list for later posts.

86 Base(4 lug), sport(5 lug no options AL hood no sunroof), gxl(all options). Thats it.
87 Same as above, with the addition of the t2, which had all options and a turbo motor.
88 SE(same as base above), GTU(same as sport above), gxl and T2(also the 10th anny car)
89-90 GTU(base model for these years, 5 lug with wing standard) gxl same as above, gtu-s(same as sport and GTU above) and T2
91 either t2 or non turbo, all non turbo's were called coupe, no trim designation, most had options of a gxl.

I'd like to see an 87 Luxury Coupe, too. I would also like to know if it had "LX" or "Limited Edition" badges, or if it was unmarked like the 86 Base. Someone on this forum said that they had one, but I forget who it was. Hmm, I guess that the whole thing could be a typo or hoax, but it is listed in the Blue Book:
http://www.kbb.com/

I don't know what all the Sport had, as my friend's Sport is stripped for racing (although it does have the original 87 spoiler). Oh boy, the GTU explanation is going to be confusing... The Sport model became known as the GTU in 1988, which became the GTUs in 1989 because the SE became known as the GTU that year.

The 2+2 was an option, not a model. Like a lot of the other options, it wasn't available on all models. I'm not sure about the other years, but in 1988 the rear seats only came in the SE and GXL. However, aftermarket rear seats were available for all 2Gen coupes.

have the sports mod my self but there is a correction needed to be made
I do have the steel hood not AL, also there is a sunroom on my car.
do have the 5 lug rims, and the aero package, also I think this only came on 86-88 sports and turbos is the variable assist power steering. and from what I understand I do have the Turbo suspension in my car(it's a lot stiffer then an 86 base I drove). do have some creature comforts like PS,AC, cruise, but no PW, or PL.

hehehehe a whole thread about models, engines, accessories, yadayadayada etc etc...:p

Over here we got only one turbo model and one NA, both fully loaded

My TII has everything on it (AC, leather, Cruise, roof etc), so no need to worry about models :p

While looking through the Series 4 microfiche yesterday, I found a listing for the LX model. It was listed for all the years that the Series 4 was produced, and appeared to be a base model with sunroof and 2+2 as options. How it difffers from the SE, I don't know.

My sport is the same as a genero-base-model, except for the sharp bodykit, wing, and stiffer suspension settings.

Actually my 87 turbo II doesn't have the aero package or power locks, and probably some other options I can't think of. My 87 sport has a sunroof and no power locks or windows. It does have the power turboII mirrors though. I'm trying to sell it or parts of it but only request I got was for a window It would make a good race car because it needs an engine rebuild or new engine (even V8 if you desire :p ) And some interior work. Oh and the turbo doesn't even have a spoiler, is that common?

It could be an LX! Actually, it's probably an SE. If you didn't buy the car new, then it could have been repainted. I haven't priced them lately, but the stickers used to be really expensive. My SE only has the sticker on one side of the car because of some body work. Also, my TII has one of the stickers in the wrong spot, so it could be that your dealership messed up, too.

Hehehe, actually it was on the first couple of pages of the Mazda factory microfiche. I was trying to find out if there was any rhyme or reason for the aluminum vs. steel hood thing when I noticed the LX listing in the factory options section. I think that this reference adds to the possibility of an LX model, although it may have never been produced, or maybe it was not imported into the US. BTW, although my friend maintains that there IS a way to determine which cars had which hoods, he has yet to show me any reference. I'll see if I can scan the options charts for you guys the next time I go over to his garage.

The fact that KBB sucks. Just reaffirms what my boss at the car lot I worked at told me. He said the KBB wasn't worth ****, that the listings were wrong, and the values were high. We always used the Black Book and the Gray Book.

Hehehe, yeah, the car lots always use the lowest values so that they can rip-off the consumers with trade-ins. The local Honda dealership tried this on my dad recently when they tried to tell him that his 95 Volvo was only worth $1,500. I have acutally found the online KBB to be the most accurate for private sales, and it usually has more models listed than the others. For example, the Luxury model...

I have the 1988 LX model beleive it or not. it was in the paper work and that is what proggresive insured it as
it consists of this:
power steering brakes and the like
sunroof
4 lug
touring "soft" suspension
cloth seats
no pwer windows or locks
no rear wiper
rear compartments
14 x 5.5 " rims and 195/75/R14 tires( which are now 215/6 14 while I am waiting for winter to go away.
thats it go out and get one. I forget what it weighs stock, I will try to find the papers.
