turbo manifold, turbo, larger injectors (depending on hp goals, stockies can hold 250hp but thats pushing them) down pipe, waste gate (again depending on turbo) some kind of fuel contorl (fmu, afc, rtek, or full standalone) intercooler, charge piping, some say you should go with a turbo front plate, oil feed and drain lines, water cooling lines (again depending on turbo)

thats just for starters, im sure im forgetting some stuff

places to check out:

I've looked online and searched everywhere and they have the t3/t4 kit that's suppose to bolt right up. It says you just need to get The turbo manifold and down pipe . I'm guessing that kit requires you to drill into the oil pan and tap a line in and out ? There's only a few things I'm not sure of

I'm kind of lost . I'm getting to the point where I'm just gonna get a few k and have a shop here do it and then it'll have guarantee . Cause this seems like something that's gonna take a lot of time. Are those greddys kits worth the 3k ?

The Greddy kit is not for n/a engines, there for the turbo models

If you have a shop do it, look forward to spending 5~6k, if you do it i'll be more like 2~4k depending on how you build it.

the turbo does not "pull" the oil, so you have to tap into an area of the oil system that is pressurized, most people do this at the oil filter by adding a sandwich plate, then for the drain you just need a line from the turbo to the top of the oil pan.

to turbocharge you GXL you will have to put together your own turbo kit, Turblown will make a manifold (for a lot of $$$) or you could find any other fabricator and have them do it(manifolds for turbo Rx7s do not fit, you will have to mod them to make them fit), you'll have to buy an intercooler and make your own piping, you'll have to find a turbo that fits the same flange as the manifold (BNR makes good turbos for the stock flange, 60-1 is a good t4) depending on the turbo you get you might also have to get a waste gate.

That's a good start when you have that stuff together people on this forum will take you more seriously, not trying to be mean that's just how it is.

G.L. and i hope this didn't frighten you off your goals. one piece of advise, research research research, the more you know the better off you'll be.

Sounds like a cool project. I've never heard about anyone trying to build their own turbo...sounds like a lot of work.

I'm no expert but I think you're going to needa some machining tools like a lathe and some dremel bits. You will probably need to do some porting.

I think a user namd loftycake or airpie or something like that wrote a write up about turbos and motors. I think it's on the internetz somewhere. Just google it.

Personally I would sell the 89 gxl and use the money to buy a turbo and motor. Making your own custom turbo sounds like its going to cost a lot of money.

The way this looks right now after reading everything I think a motor swap is probably the way to go. Cause a turbo II motor is like 1500 then I'll just rebuild it and do some minor work on it before I drop it in but then I'll have to either get a wiring harness or modify the original one and swap the ECU and the list of things go on. But this is just my starting ground to figure out how I'm going to tackle this project.

Doesn’t he need the transmission and rear end if he ends up going that route?
