Turn Signal Issue

OK I hope that I searched enough...I found one post from 2002 that touched on the subject but really didn't answer my problem directly.

So to start off, I have a 1990 GTU coupe and the problem...The turn signals flat out don't work. Neither the left turn or the right turn light up in the dash, nor do the bulbs flash. The Hazards light up inside the dash and the bulbs flash.

I am guessing that the switch with the lever on it is broken. If this is the problem, when I go to replace it, is it necessary to remove the Steering Wheel (as the Haynes manual states), or how do I go about replacing the switch.

An Advanced thank you to anyone who can offer some insight...I am new so please be as literal as possible

-Geoff

It isn't necessary to remove the steering wheel but it sure makes it easier.
It's not terribly hard (except maybe the first time) and sure makes replugging in the connectors less awkward.

If you do remove the wheel, a little bit of antiseize on the splines will make future removal much easier.

+1 for the above advice, I have the same car as you and if you take the steering wheel off, it makes it alot easier, and less chance of breaking the bezel or any of the other plastic parts. If you have acess to an air gun, that works great to take off the streering wheel bolt. If not use your tire wrench and a breaker bar. The only other advice I could give you is once you get the wheel off, look to make sure you dont lose the plastic pieces behind it. They also need to be aligned up correctly to get you signal to work properly. If you need any other help post back.

its either a bad fuse, bad ground, or bad bulb. the last resort would be the switch.

I had modt of these problems in the vert a while back and I ended up having to replace the CPU. If you need to in your case, they are available from Mazdatrix and are pretty cheap and easy to replace.

Thanks for all the advice...I'll check the fuse first, because I know how to do that. I know its not the bulbs because the hazards both light up when I depress the hazard button. As far as checking the grounds, thats new to me...

Not only am I new to rotaries, i'm new to cars in general

Thanks for the additional advice though

Actually on the s4 it IS necessary to remove the steering wheel. If you don't you will break the plastic gauge surround and the tabs on the dash (ask me how I know...)
On s5's I think you can do it without removing the steering wheel, but don't force it.
One more possbile cause is the CPU computer that is part of the CPU. If thats the case then I have a spare FC01 CPU if thats the model you need.
