i know of another things that causes this, your fuel pump!! It may be faulty, and when u turn the ignition on the click is from the AFM relay, you can try if you have a series 4 AFM, opening the flap on the airflow meter when u try and start the car, this tricks the car into thinking alot of air is coming into the engine, so then the right amount of fuel has to be injected, which can sometimes get the pump working. Replace the pump and see if it works, if this dont help then yeah i got nothing

 

Nah it's not the fuel pump... Nearly brand new Walbro with the rewire already done...

 

I have an extra ignition switch if you want to try that. That's probably not the problem, but just incase.

 

That's about the last thing I wanna try Jason... You know how I am with electrical ****...

 

My car was not starting and just clicking one day out of nowhere on my last motor, and it turned out to be that one of the spark plug wires not getting a connection to the coil. Replaced the wires, and never had anymore problems......... hope you fix it bro.....

 

one other thing nobody has mentoned yet is the start disable on the clutch. just cut the wires and stick em together. its a little switch behind the clutch pedal. tats a halfass way of fixing it but itll tell you if thats it or not. butbe careful, it will start in gear after that. hope you get it fixed

 

I'm not retarded enough to start my car without checking the gear first and holding the clutch, so I may try that anyways... Thanks!

 

*DING DING* Looks like we have a winner In all likelihood, this is the culprit! I had the same issue when I sold my FC and the starter/battery were brand new. The ignition switch was also fine and this was my last possible cause - supposedly it's pretty common on FC's these days.

 

Ok cool looks like that's a definate option, and something I may as well go ahead and take care of, whether it's the cause or not!

 

Probably wouldn't be the clutch switch if there is a click, click click.

 

Needs better grounding maybe????

 

hey it's your starter, I had that same problem of you turn it over and it click's. The starter has gone bad whether it's the sileniod or the starter it self it needs to be replaced. If everything checks out with your battery and stuff, that clicking noise is the starter not responding, it you can get to the starter hit with a hammer and that should loosen it up, maybe. But most likely it's your starter.

I dunno... because it happened to me with a brand new one and I fixed it by adding an extra ground from the engine to the chassis. But again this worked for me, I'm not saying it will work for him.... It could be a bad starter...

 

I'm thinkin that it is CABLE related since he stated that he relocated the battery.. a connection somewhere is not right..I'm gonna bet it is the one TO THE STARTER ..due to the cables ...they are most likely not secure ..and you are getting intermittent power to your starter from the battery..check the positive at the starter...and PLEASE BE CAREFULL ..JUST TO BE SAFE ..DISCONNECT THE BATTERY ..CHECK AT THE STARTER ..THEN CHECK WIRES AT STARTER ,UNDER CAR ..THEN RECONNECT AND TRY TO START THE CAR(sorry for caps..tryin to stress safety ..!!!)..GOOD LUCK

 

Yea I'm positive now that it's the cables, because like I said, I just took the starter off a friend's car who was borrowing it, and it worked perfect for him... If anyone saw this wiring job they would be stupid not to agree... lol

 

I have been having this EXACT same problem. I too replaced my fuel pump not too long ago, and unfortunately, I too have had electrical modifications done to my car (fuel pump kill switch). And I also have a new battery, so that dosn't solve it. I think my ignition switch is working, because if I leave the key in the start position and mess with the clutch, I hear a quiet click. I think it's the solenoid though because when after a few quiet clicks, I'll hear a few louder clicks (solenoid) and then the starter will engage. The problem now is that sometimes the solenoid will not click, leaving me stranded. I was stranded just about 30 minutes ago and had to get a jump from a V12 Merc. I'll try the quick fixes on this post first. This is very helpful, the moderator should put this in the archives becuase it seems alot of people are having this problem.

 

If you were able to jump it, you probably aren't having the same problem as me... It just made a solitary "click" and wouldn't start... Wouldn't jump... Just "click"...

 

If it happens often, then it is probably the starter soleniod. (I don't know if you can buy them seperately for the FC.) For older cars, the rule was, if you are stuck and it won't start, tap the starter with a hammer and then you are good to go.

 

Yea you can tap the FC's starter and it helps if it's dying... It'll get you started anyways...

 

i think it's a *turn key*, *click*, *turn key again*, *click*.... and it's coming near the driver side. i have the same problem, just haven't looked into it yet

could be the main relay? or the clutch switch (starter circuit interlock).

 

Now to all of you guys who gave this problem:


Fried starter armiture. I went through FOUR remanned starters while tracking down this very same problem on my FC. I just kept getting a string of bad remans.


If you take your starter into a rebuild place they will take it apart, look at the charred remains of your 15 year old starter, and laugh and laugh and laugh.

Then rebuild it and your car will start

 

I can't beleive this thread has been going on this long. If you get a fast, repeating click, you have a loose connection at the battery.

If one of the relays, such as the clutch switch is bad, you won't get a click or anything from the starter or solenoid.

Is the sound a large metalic click, such as something hitting the flywheel? I would replace the starter. Been working on cars a long time and seen many things. The starter can engage the flywheel, but be to weak to turn the motor. Take off your starter, run it to the parts store and have it tested for free. Its two 14MM bolts, one has a nut on the end, a small ground plug, and a 12MM bolt for the positive power wire. Takes a whole 10 minutes once your under the car.

I've already said repeatedly, that I've traced the problem to the battery wiring... More specifically, to the wiring between the starter and solenoid... Problem solved, thread over.... How many times do I have to say that my starter is just fine?!
