turbo transmissions (help)

the tranny is out on my 88 tenth anniversery turbo. i was told by someone that i should buy a transmission from an 89-91 model b/c he said they are stronger. well its almost 200 dollars more and i am wondering 1. will it fit right, and 2. is it worth it?

thank you for any help you can give me.

I don't remember hearing that the S5 turbo trans is strong then the S4. I know the TII trans is stronger then the N/A trans. Just out of curiosity, whats wrong with your trans?

they will both fit, and i don't think one is stronger than the other. i hear that the s5 has a slightly different 5th gear.

BOth are Type R trannies so just stick with the S4 one if it's cheaper.

well, from what i have gathered it has a chipped tooth of some sort. 2nd gear makes a grinding sound when in gear, 1st does this half the time, and is sometimes hard to get in gear, and 5th likes to pop itself out of gear. it was all fine not too long ago, the only problem was that 2nd gear grinded when shifting to 2nd, but if you were gentle it didnt do it. now all of a sudden we have this. so what do you think i should do? s4, or is it worth it to get something better?

Get an s4. If you do swap an s5 get the crossmember with it they are tranny specific.

The difference in s4 and s5 is the final drive ratio. Stay with the s4 and save the $200

yeah, check your tranny crossmember if you swap. When I swapped my auto for a manual tranny, I ended up grabbing a couple trannys off some donor cars and noticed that the crossmembers mount to the trans slightly differently.

the final drive ratio is not determined by the transmission.

the original poster was asking if the S5 trans is better than the S4's, as the trans in his 10AE is worn, as the synchros are beginnning to grind. he stated that he found an S5 trans for $200 more than an S4 trans he was looking at and wanted to know if it was worth the extra cash for the S5 trans. as we all know the type R trans is a better design than the type M used in N/A cars and there really isnt any advantage to using an S5 trans over the S4 trans because they both use the type R trans.
