Turbo smoking -- rebuild dilemna?
My turbo oil seals are shot it seems, causin the 7 to smoke a lot.. i have another turbo here.. but the thing is - I ported my wastegate on my current turbo, and I'm wondering:
If I put the new(replacement) turbo on - I will have to port that wastegate too -- and with my car being tuned in perfectly now, what are the chances of the the new turbo's ported wastegate varying from the first one that i did and therefore causing a problem?
or
how hard is it to take apart both turbos and swap the internals from the good one to the smoking/ported one. (to save myself from having to port the new wastegate/creat more problems)
I would RATHER just swap the internals, but havent had a turbo apart yet... how hard is that to do?

Its not that hard to port the wategate, and as long as the wastegate functions properly it won't make that big a difference provided that your port is anywhere near the same size (which you should be able to do since you'll have it there to reference)
If you swap internals you'll have to have the turbo rebalanced by a turbo shop which will cost you money, and time if there isn't a shop local to you.

is your turbo stock?
All you need to do it swap the housings, the wheel does not need to be touched. So the balance will not be effected. Hopefully the used replacement u get is not smoking and has decent shaft play.
scribing a mark will not do too much since your putting the housing on a differnt turbo. But at least it will give u an idea if u forget how the turbo was clocked.
That would be better than trying to duplicate your old port job, either way you gotta take out the housing to port the turbo. Dont tell me you ported your first wastegate without taking off the housing?

and yes i ported the wastegate without taking off the housing. i had compressed air constantly blowings from the compressor side, and a shopvac constantly hovering over the hotside sucking up any metal pieces.
i also took extra caution to clean out anything that may have gotten into the turbine before i used the turbo.
it had some shaft play before i even installed it(shoulda been an indicator not to use it, but i was impatient/anxious).
the replacement has virtually no shaft play.
thanks for clearing some things up guys.

Here are some pics to help out. To take the turbo apart just loosen (remove) 4 bolts. There are 2 more that have to be worked against eachother. Just turn one of the 2 a little at time and the turbo will pop open.Could take a little elbow grease to turn the 2 bolts. I ended rounding the edges a little so I used some of the good bolts off the other turbo. It might be helpful to have someone help you buy holding the turbo when putting it back together. Also take apart the crappy turbo first so you get an idea on how to take it apart.
It's so easy my dog has done it.
