lol sarcasm.

there is no quick easy way to ''tighten'' up the turbos shaft play.

quick link for turbo questions:
http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...nter/faqs.html

''What is/causes Shaft Play?
Shaft play is caused by the bearings in the center section of the turbo wearing out over time. When a bearing is worn, shaft play, a side to side wiggling motion of the shaft occurs. This in turn causes the shaft to scrape against the inside of the turbo and often produces a high-pitched whine or whizzing noise. This is a potentially serious condition that can lead to internal damage or complete failure of the turbine wheel or the turbo itself.''

Turbo rebuilding video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2CwBwrdnvA

company that rebuilds:
http://bnrsupercars.com/ (im my opinion, too pricey.. you can piece together a better one, cheaper)

In your case of a stock turbo, ur gonna have to either:
A: rebuild via http://bnrsupercars.com, or whatever other company
B: buy a rebuild kit and do it urslef, i dont know what kit u would need.
C: buy a different turbo, manifold, and downpipe, and if the turbo doesnt have an internal wastegate(controls boost) then u will need to buy a extrenal wastgate. (this is the route i took and im happy with the results.)
D: let it keep going

a little shaft play isnt necessarily bad, but if the blades get to the point where its touching the housing, uve got SERIOUS issues.

I can message u my cell number if u want more help, ive got a friend thats VERY big in the DSM world that knows more about turbos then most ppl know about there own children

k-tune, that literally took less then 2 mins to put together. not sure y ppl are so quick to
be sarcastic on here, but it REALLY could stop, and this forum go a little smother.
im not trying to **** talk, just dont see the point of opening a thread to be a jerk.. 2cents

Yea well their aren't many shops around here that do. Just another one of the upsides of living in cali.

I have a S5 turbo with no shaft play. I'll sell it to you for 80$ if you come and pick it up.

gpopshop is on my blacklist, I bought a rebuild kit from them a few years back and they sent the wrong kit. Jerry was a huge PITA to reach and even more to get to send out the correct kit. My calls stopped being answered and I never did get the correct kit. Therefore, gpopshop has earned a big FU in my book and I tend to post my experience whenever I see their shop listed.

I have a rebuild kit I picked up through gpopshop a couple months ago, and I have no complaints. The upside to buying from them is they sell a kit specifically for the Hitachi HT-18, which will use an encapsulated carbon seal & matching thrust collar. If you buy a generic T3/T4 rebuild kit, be sure it uses the encapsulated front seal & a 270 degree thrust bearing. 4 piece carbon seals and dynamic seals will require different compressor back plates, and a 360 degree thrust bearing will require modification of the CHRA (drill/tap/add a grub screw).

The basic kit will work, but it won't include some parts such as the thrust spring and thrust collar. Both of the turbos I just took apart had the springs completely bowed out.

There's a good walk-through here (http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/turbo/turborebuild.html). It has some good tips like how to "jack" the turbine housing off the CHRA by forcing the bolts to press against the oil flanges.

^ $110 for a basic rebuild kit is steep. The gpop full kit I linked to is $96.

The compressor nut is not reverse threaded, and before breaking it loose, make sure you mark across the nut and shaft. If you reassemble everything exactly the way it was before you took it apart, you can avoid the need for re-balancing.

i little play is normal. as long as the compressor doesnt contact the housing you are OK.

as far as rebuild kits, these guys are cheaper than gpopshop.. rebuild kit was $85 including 360 thrust bearing
