turbo shaft play?

So I started to get ready to pull my engine and I took the TID off and felt the turbo and it spins pretty freely left and right with no play going in and out, but it does move a few centimeters up and down. Is this good or bad?

Thanx

ok a few centimeters? are you certain or did you mean millimeters?
If it is centimeters your turbo has issues... if it is a millimeter or two it is still ok but probably on it's later half of life.

thats like my turbo, there was only once, alittle bit of oil in the cold side but I have an aftermarket TID so theres no chance of oil coming in through the intake. And mine moves a couple millimeters up and down but not forward and back, works fine, spools with no problem (8psi)

As I recall, the only test in the FSM is to ensure that the turbine blades don't hit the housing.

Mine has play in all directions, but doesn't hit the housing, and it works great.

a little play up and down is normal, it should have some up and down play...

endplay is a different story and means the thrust bearings are on their way out.
