Do you still have the stock cat and pre-cat in place? If so...it's likely they are clogged. Try tapping with a rubber hammer...if you hear "gravel" inside you need to gut them or replace them. Also check the TID, it's prone to cracking on the bottom so it's hard to find. I had similar problems...it was a little of this, a little of that but I did get it fixed and the turbo is fine (did not replace the turbo). Here's what I did:

Replaced the TID....mine was cracked where it went into the turbo.

Cleaned Fuel Injectors....Mine were leaking and the car just ran
poorly.

New air filter....eased restriction in intake

New Plugs

Added HKS downpipe (pre-cat was clogged)

Replaced main cat with Bonez straight pipe

Replaced intake gaskes and exhaust manifold and turbo gaskets

Car runs great now....makes full boost

P.S. You can check the condition of the tubo when you have the TID off (look for bent or eroded fins and check the shaft for play).

The intercooler hoses like to come loose alot. I've had that happen quite a few times.

It sounds like your cats are toast. You can either gut them and go with a downpipe presilencer combo or you can go get a high flow cat instead if your worried about emissions. My suggestion is to just gut them, you will get a nice power increase, and the turbo will work fine again.

Checking the TID is probably a good idea anyways, the plastic gets real hard and brittle over time. Replacing it with a larger free flowing TID will also increase power.

TID stands for turbo inlet duct. Im pretty sure its the tube that goes from your ar box dox to your turbo.

Guys,

The stock turbo is VERY durable if it is taken care of. There are SO many other things that can affect boost pressure. You can check the turbo by removing the TID. Try to spin the turbine...it should be smooth and spin freely. Also check the fore/aft play of the shaft...there should not be any and check the up/down play...a little is OK as long as the turbine does not come into contact with the housing. By the way...stock Turbos for '87 - '88 cars can routinely be found for less than $200.00.

Good advice guys! I had the same problem with my 88T2 when I got it. Cracked TID, bad turbo gaskets, & clogged cats...But my stck Turbo just went bad at 118k, replaced it with a Ported Turbo and she runs better then ever! Long live the Turbo II...Great cars!
