Turbo pics: Good, bad, soso?

Well I had finally got the turbine housing removed from the center section and while I was inspecting it I noticed a few problems. Both of the housing have minor, if you want to call them that, cracks inside the turbine housing, one is slightly larger that the other. And the one has all the fins slightly nicked on the very bottom part. On that same one I notice some drag from the cup thing that is inbetween the center section and the turbine wheel, and it has spacer/plate between the cup and the center section. I do not think that is normal. Where as the other one has no drag, it looks because it is lacking the little spacer/plate between the cup thingy and the center section. Is that bad? Here are some pics hopefully they will be of some help..

Those cracks dont look too bad. Obviously you dont want any cracks, but small ones like that are pretty much "normal" for a used higher milage turbo.

As far as that spacer between the cup part, I noticed that my S4 turbo has one, but my S5 doesnt...

Yes actually the one is a S5 Turbo, I I guess that is normal then? Is it also better? I would assume from my stand point that it is because the other one has drag in it.

I also feel that since the cracks are internal that is alittle better interms of exhaust gases not being able to leak out..

There are actually 2o cracks in each, the other two are hairline, you can only see them in the correct light, SUre I can take better pics..Also there is oil around the outside of both of the compressor housings, is that normal? And where would it come from?

Hmmm on the s5 turbo I found oil inside of the compressor housing, I assume that is bad, any idea where it came from? And I am guessing the turbo is pretty shot then?

Those cracks are pretty normal. Any turbo exposed to high temps that make it glow bright red are gonna have some cracks. Nothing to worry about. Looks like a low mileage one to me as well. Never seen a used one with no cracks. Low or hi mileage. I would worry about the chips on the turbine wheel. Might have to replace it. The rebuilder will let you know whats good and whats not. Oil in the turbine means the brearing or seal or one of those(dont recall what the name of the one that seals in oil) is blown. If you use it you will burn oil and smoke from your tal pipe. Looks like it need a rebuild. It will look like new when you get it back.
