To turbo or not to turbo

I have been planning on putting a TII in my 91 vert for several weeks. Well I got 2k to work with.
Here's my question:
Should I just have my motor rebuilt, ported, get a RB header and full exhaust..I could probably get a side draft carb on as well < had one before..sweet! > I could prob repaint my car also
OR
Should I just get a jspec TII motor, tranny, etc and swap them out?

I'm just looking for 220 or so rwhp.

What do you guys recommend?
If I go for the full TII swap can someone list everything I'll need.
Thanks!

If you only want 220 or so RWHP, and don't mind the lows on a carb\webber setup...... My take is, get a Jspec, sell the turbo, turbo manifold, intake manifold, rotors, intercooler, etc. Sell what ever you can from your current NA engine except for the rotors, use the jspec block, port it, use your NA rotors, get a RB intake manifold and Holley, or a webber setup if you can.

The outcome?

Desired HP without turbo

so basically just put a carb setup on a 4 port?
My friend just said $1000 for the install of the motor and computer. Cheapest TII motor I can find around is a S5 for 1050.00< jspec >
I'm seriously just thinking, screw it! put a RB header, and repaint it and be done < and slow :-( >

Put a 4.10 NA lsd in it, Go with the 4 port Carb if you like carb tuning.

libero will have some JDM junkyard pullouts next week for 650 each

why would u put a carb on the NA and then remove the 6 ports?

I am just a little confused i guess. I've heard that a good carb will increase Hp buy 30% over the oem fuel injection, but then there are lots of people that say that fuel injection is better. So which is better for power gains? and why remove the 6 ports?

my take would be to just keep the 6-port housings and replace the injection system if u want to.

or use your NA rotors in the jspec engine for a high compression turbo. but with this idea u would be taking a risk....9.4:1 rotors would work but 9.7:1 might be pushing it. and u'd need to change the fuel management system with this idea anyways which will up the cost a lot.

I had a dellorto side draft on my 86 GXL with a streetported motor. Unfortunately it had stock exhaust < no headers or anything! > I easily had 200hp. I killed foxbody 5.0's, numerous imports, etc. I really like the torque it put down. Had really really good power in 5th, just kept pulling like in 3rd and 4th. Awesome topend. Unfortunately, the tq was too good. I kept snapping the rear diff mount, even after having a solid steel piece welded in place of the hard rubber one.

whoa
Well u sold me!
that's wicked!
as soon as my emissions testing is gone i'm gettin' one of those carbs.

How was ur fuel mileage after u put that on? and did u need to get it tuned? How much is a sidedraft carb?

oh yeah
does a carb replace the pulsation damper? I hate that bloody thing and if I could find a safer setup I would.

gas mileage... oh wait..you're serious...uhm...15-17mpg..pretty hard on her to. I ONLY used the highest octane I could get, usually 91 or better. Yeah I could rev it to about 5 and drop the clutch and just smoke tires for over 1/2 a block. I have 235/45/17, with Konig tuners at the time, so they were pretty good size tires. In the colder climates just make sure you have a choke installed. My friend had it put in place of the cigarette lighter. Looked very cool. Racingbeat has them. Try www.thepartstrader.com for one. It clean up everything nicely. No fuel injection crap, no computers to worry about. Get a dellorto, weber, or holley. I had a dellorto, but the center two chamber of the intake had been ported to make one LARGE one.
Needless to say the car was WAY faster than my TII.

heh cool

do u think i'd see much of a gain without porting the engine?
considering my FC only has about 50k miles on it I don't really wanna take it all apart yet.

my FC get's roughly 15 mpg now with the fuel injection, so it would sound like not too much of a difference.

I am up in vancouver BC. In the winter it barley goes below freezing. Man I can't wait for aircare to be gone in the next few years.

maybe like...... 400! muwhaha

That would be fun to play around with

but reading this post makes me think go carb instead of TII swap???

I love the turbo's as well. Its just that most carbs that Ive seen lately, dont have a lot of tuning issues likeolder ones. After mine was installed, and a few test runs down the street, that was it. Never touched again for a year or so. WE have no emissions here in Florida so I should have got a header and 2.5" exhaust to help. But talk about sleeper! Stock ehaust, roll up to riced out integra vtec, or even better, a V8<gasp>, let them rev on me because I have rims, then just drop it and smoke em in first and chirp in 4th
I think I've read that with a good port job, and exhaust some of those carb setups can get you around 240 or so.
BTW, my setup was used $500, $1000 to pull motor, port, and reinstall everything.

240HP is a lot for an NA
any more and ur gonna start snapping driveshafts and stuff.
I trust a carb a lot more than a turbo and the mazda EFI system. (mine's started leaking) to replace my stock EFI i'm lookin' at around $1000 US already. I figure the EFI has got about a couple more years left and then i'll put on some side drafts.

Did you do the install yourself?

N/A or Turbo??

I've been trying to figure out if I wanted to swap a 13BT or not as well. I'm looking just to get 200-220 hp. I was gonna buy a JDM engine and swap that, but after after going thru a SR20DET swap attempt (failed because the engine was shot). I just get nightmares thinking about it now. I'm just gonna get my engine rebuilt and a Street Port and just have fun with what that. All out power isnt my goal with my FC, just a good over all package. Well after my little ramble, for what you have I just just stay N/A. People say im an idiot as well... =P

For big power you can't beat turbo, but if all you're wanting is around 230hp then that N/A setup sounds nice. I'd love to do that to a 1st gen. It'd make a nice compliment to my TII.
