Turbo II low boost question

I went and test drove a turboII for sale today. Very cheap, and seemed to be in great shape, but I want to check on a few things. When driving, I noticed the boost only jumped to 5psi max. I could feel it kick in, but it really didn't impress me. What could be wrong with the car to reduce the boost? The car DOES have 122k on it, and thats another reason why i'm a little nervous. I'm going back over there tomorrow, and I want to know what to look for.

Thanks!
Matt

with 122K could be clogged cats, clooged fuel filter, need for new plugs, etc. how do you know it was hitting 5psi? aftermarket boost gauge? the stock ones read in mm/hg3. it could be just some simple stuff...

You don't say what year it was. Stock boost for 86-88 is 5.56psi, 89-91 is 8.25psi, but if the stock cats are still in place, they're probably quite cloogged after 122,000 miles, and that'll kill exhaust flow and boost.

Its an '87, and there is an aftermarket boost gauge on it. I guess it really didn't impress me though, and I heard the Turbo IIs really move. Whats the first step to bump it up a bit without toasting the engine?

You could put a 3" enhaust and open element air filter on it, with a FCD. This will make the car feel TOTALLY different.

But with 122K, don't expect it to last for too long.

Clean and balance the injectors, Downpipe, highflow cat, good cat back exhaust, and new intake (or K&N Filtercharger OEM replacement). With 122k on the engine though, you probably won't be getting a lot more miles out of it regardless.
