Turbo II front mount
Has anyone with a TII moved their stock intercooler to front mount? any gains? I have an 88 with a pretty modified motor. I heard this would be a good idea.

I plan on doing an aftermarket FMIC, but in the meantime I was going to mount my stock intercooler up front. I was wondering if that was anybetter than the stock one mounted on top.

it sux cuz ppl always say search....so u end up going through 20 threads with ppl saying search.......this is not as common...I was quoted 800 bux for custom piping for the TMIC relocatio to the front!!!! 
so i am not gonna do it...I dunno where to get it done cheap.

I'm a pretty decent TIG welder, I'm thinking about making my own piping and mounting my original IC up front. I found a shop locally to make the bends for me. If it works well, I'd like to make a bunch of them to sell as a kit. A close friend owns Rotary RX Inc. (www.rotaryrx.com will be up soon) a local 7 shop. He said he'd market them on his website. It would be cool to make a kit people could actually afford!! using the stock IC.

IC's are not expensive as before and if you know how to weld, just use your imagination and go for it. I've seen some new decent size intercoolers with end tanks and 2.5 In/Out for about $200 in Ebay.

The shop I use does use mandrel bends. I have made intake tubes for Hondas and stuff. Aluminum can get kinda wrinkly if not mandrel bent. I figured keep the stock IC just to keep cost down, for the guy just wanting some extra power for the street. Where can i buy intercoolers w/out the tanks? Maybe it would be cheaper to fab my own tanks. Probably not. Thanks silverrotor for the links. I'm new here and still figuring stuff out.

has anyone ever bought a core off ebay that fit well and also used the pre bent silicone ic hoses or aluminum hoses that come off ebay as well??? I've got no idea how to mandrel bend however on ebay they have 90's and 45's and straights all day long??? I think this would be way cheaper than getting a 1000 or more dollar kit from greddy.

One of the trickiest parts of the FMIC is selecting a size to coincide with the turbo selection(IE: T25 would not need a large FMIC due to the manifold pressure at full efficiency being 10-12 lbs. roughly). Therefore if you had a 3 core spearco on a t25, the turbo would run 10-12 lbs. but the pressure at the manifold would only indicate that of 6ish lbs. The reason? It takes a portion of that boost to fill the FMIC. So larger is not always better. However if you're running 18lbs. off a T78 with a 3 core then boost sag is not an issue. The T-78 could fill the FMIC in a range of 200-300 rpms, vurtually eliminating pressure drop. Basically it's like taking a hose, and running it for a bit, and then it hits a big bottle and has to continue through the other end of the hose after the bottle is full, that would take forever with a regular garden hose...but with a fire hose it would take a matter of seconds, and almost no pressure drop would be recorded. So there is two easy ways to avoid this:
1. Get a smaller IC for a smaller turbo
2. Get a bigger turbo to fill the huge FMIC.
* However, the stock turbo on the TII does get noticeable gains from the FMIC. You can't fit a supra intercooler in a TII, so pressure loss is minimal. However, if you custom fab one in.....thing size.

Awesome info ground zero, Lots of stuff I hadn't thought about. If I do switch to an FMIC, I'll probably use the stock IC for now. When I get the T70 I'll worry about a bigger one. Then I'll allready have the pipe in place! Have you heard of anyone putting an electric fan on the intercooler? or would that just be restriction at 100MPH?

I put mine in for about $600 including the FMIC, bends, hoses, clamps and welding.
Doesn't interfere with any of the oil or radiator cooling.

Doesnt matter. Has nothing to do with anything like what was just said. If you want to go the cheap route but want good results find an NPR intercooler, run the piping yourself. BAM! As good as it gets with out breaking the bank.
