turbo engine died, what's next?
Hi all, was driving back from visiting my girlfriend in pullman (3 hour trip) and with 25 miles left to go, loose TONS of power. It almost had no power under 4000 rpm. I pull over to the side of the road thinking an important VAC line came off but found none. Unflooded the car, and started to go again with very little power. It took a sec but I finally realized I was lawm mowering it. (running off one rotor). I took the chance and attempted to limp it home but only got 2 miles before the other rotor died. Right before I heard it die I heard some weird clicking, I dont know what predetination sounds like, but that might have been it. (or the apex seals flying around) When I try to start the car it spins to easy (like the starter is just free spinning) but the engine is spinning. I'm guessing I blew like 4 out of the 6 apex seals or something somehow. *shrug* Anyways other then having a huge empty angry freeling in my chest, I need some ideas on what to do.
I have 2 NA motors I can put in, (since my car was originally an NA 88 GTU) or can I put the t2 turbo stuff on the NA engine? Like the UIM LIM and so on and run turbo on the NA? I have both NA and t2 clutches and flywheels, but no good T2 motors.
What should/can I do guys? Is it easy to make the NA t2 if you have a blown t2 to take everything off of? Also is there any issues running an NA core on the t2 tranny?
Also I would like a moment of silence for the fallen t2 motor.
..........................
Thanks all.

you cant use the t2 manifolds on the na block (without modification). the t2 has 4 ports, the NA has 6. im assuming everything is stock, you have the t2 ecu, map sensor, afm, ect?

Yeup I have (HAD) a prefeclty good running t2 everything before it blew. So I have EVERYTHING needed to run t2, just dont have any t2 engines left, just NA. (All s4 btw)
Sounds like I should just put the NA back in. Since that will require the NA flywheel, I will have to use my NA clutch. There isn't any issues mating the NA engine upto the T2 tranny is there? I already have a full T2 rear end on.

Im guessing that the t2 motor is damaged beyond cheap repair (If I blew some apex seals, is there a good chance it screwed up the housing / went through the turbo on eject?), and wouldnt I only get like 200 per NA motor? I thought NAs were super cheap and easy to get?

i know how you feel i blew my T2 engine about 3 months ago...blown coolant seal = teh fail
i agree with 87 t-66 id sell both the NA engines and buy a good turbo motor or send off the engine to get rebuilt

I dont think that selling 2 NA motors would equal enough to have my t2 fixed or find a good t2. Every motor I get that people say is good with no issues, always has tons. I think I will just stick with the engines I know are perfect. (My NA's)
I think I have made up my mind, just put the NA back in there, save the gas milage and minimize future issues. This is such a blow to the chest I don't want it to happen again anytime soon. Dang I just got a boost gauge and everything.

But yes you can run the t2 manifolds on the 6port block without any modification, other then coolant /oil feed.

Does anybody know the thread to how to convert and NA block to a turbo block? It's kinda hard to search NA to turbo without getting 100000 threads about putting a t2 into a NA car. My friend natural smooth says all I need to do is change the front cover or do things a lot more simple then aaron cake did. His website scared me.

nah not on a rebuilt on either motors and they run great. im using full t2 harness since mine is a turboII from the factory and he's using all the na stuff. we both have bigger fuel pumps(255's) and safc's. i have the neo and he has the safcII. he just recently upgraded to a t3/t4 and hes not having any issues at all. i would say just go for it.

hmmmm ok well this is what I am going to do. I got a friend that is going to let me borrow a his t2 small block for a little while, I am going to install all my large block t2 stuff on his small block and run that for a while till he wants it back. Then I will take all the t2 stuff off his block and put it on my NA. Unless its seriously easy to put the t2 stuff on the NA? Is it just take it off my t2 and put it on my NA or what is this whole port matching thing about?

hmmm I have having a serious issue finding a howto or walk through on how to convert an NA block to turbo. Since I see a lot of NA turbos how days I'm guessing its easy, but I would still like to see what is required.
what i did to port the manifold is i took the stock na intake gasget and jbwelded what wasn't needed for it and portmatched off the na intake gasket on the turbo lim. ill see if i can't get a pic for you
I have an awesome idea
Take apart all 3 engines. Your irons from your TII sould still be good
Switch the sleeves out of you busted TII housings into your best 2 NA housings, Spec out all of the seals and use the best ones.
Spend $300 - $400 on an oring and gasket kit and front and rear main seal and put it back together.
Asuming most of the parts are still good i dont see why this wouldnt work, most would argue for you to spend The extra money on new apex seals/springs though.
You can either use NA rotors or find some used TII rotors.

i would buy a oil filter pedistool and use the t2 front cover. the im using the coolant lines for the bac for the coolant to the turbo. i have no emissions also which makes the swap easier.
na rotors work fine aslong as u get ur fuel tuned correctly
