Turbo 13B owners.... want to run high boost on cheap pump gas 91/92/94 octane?

This thread is for the turbocharged guys interested in running high boost on the street with pump gas vs. having to buy $7-8/gallon 116 octane race gas which messes up your O2 sensor in the process.

I realize I am not running a rotary in my RX-7 anymore (no flames.... to each his own).... I'm just passing this along to you turbo'd 13B's as this info applies to any forced induction engine and IMO should be made more public for those interested in having their cars in "kill" mode all the time.

*********************************************
I have an SMC alchy injection kit on my GN powered RX-7 which costs about $350. This lowers combustion temps about 200* fahrenheit and cools charge allowing more boost to be run (to get the temps back up to where they should be). Use an EGT guage to tune for optimum temp and what to set your adjustable fuel pressure regulator at. In my setup optimum temp is 1550-1600* Fahrenheit at WOT at the top of 3rd gear. If temps are lower..... it means I'm running rich.... higher... means I'm running lean (and have probably fried a piston already if it is much over 1650*). I always tune rich and then lean it out slowly when doing any major boost changes.

In a nutshell alchy allows me to run much higher boost and timing on 91 pump gas (highest we get here in CA at the pump). On regular 91 I could barely run 15psi with only 18* timing without detonation and making about 325hp (if that) on a stock GN turbo.

Now with the alchy kit activated via a boost sensitive Hobbs switch....... under boost at 14psi it gets activated ( I set it to come on at that point)... I can now run 22psi and 23* timing on crappy 91 octane with no detonation. This puts me at about the 400hp level on my stock turbo using denatured alcohol that I get for $7/gallon at Sherwin Williams paint store and the car feels like a madman. 1/2 gallon reservoir lasts me about 4-5 daysand I get on the throttle often.

Another option is the recently released propane injection available from OGS (developed by Buick GN guru Jay Carter). Same idea however inlet temps are greatly reduced as propane is not only a cooling agent (like water or alcohol) but it also is a fuel adder. This is a little more costly but it is something like 130 octane and 60 * below zero inlet temps (similar to spraying NOS with inlet temp drop... but much safer)!!!! $600..... but this may be the ticket on keeping the detonation out of your 13B and running high boost. Also guys are only needing to refill the propane bottle every few MONTHS!!!!! Refill at any propane refilling station is only $5-8!!!!

Good luck and may the boost be with you. Staying at the front of the pack always means you need to stay sharp and know of the latest innovations available and see what works for you cost effectively (get alchy injection or propane instead of a larger turbo and running it at low boost on pump gas). I plan to get a TE-62 turbo soon..... and with alchy injection and 91/100 octane mix in the tank I plan to run some major boost on the street (25psi+). That should put me at over 600hp and a true terror to contend with.

Very interesting products, although the propane injection scares me.

hmmm.. i wonder if this would be practical for a road race app. It would be good if you would run out of gas and alcohol at around the same time. It would stink to come in every few laps just to fill the alcohol reservoir.

i dont think the propane system would be legal for track use. I dont think they will like the idea of a pressureised bottle in the car....

I really like both of these systems. maybe it would be nivcer to run a smaller propane bottle.

I am making my own water/alcohol mixed injection kit for about 40$. Buying a kit for 300+ is stupid (hey, same with most brand name kits!).

Just so you know, alcohol will lower the temps like you said. However, adding water is a octane buffer. It WILL raise your octane a few points. They make a good mix

The MK4 Supra guys have started messing around with propane and have had some plain awesome results. One guy got his stock fuel car down into the 10's on the propane!
