Question tune-up questions and need real rotary mechanic

A friend gave me his 89 Mazda RX7 GTU n/a (115k miles-no rebuild yet) a year ago. After reading thru this forum, I'm hooked despite being $1100 poorer and really torqued at myself.

1. What's the best compression tester I can get at a decent price? In 1998 (80k miles), it flooded twice, the dealer did compression tests (no results), carbon blasting, cleaned BAC valve and t-body.
2. Can I use TLK to help clean the fuel injectors until I can get them really cleaned? They've never been serviced.
3. Can I dump an engine cleaner via the fuel tank? If so, what type?
4. I had trouble starting the engine (it'd been sitting for 2 weeks), flooded it, placed a new battery, got it going. The mechanic at Brand X station in Houston then put 4 NGK BUR7EQ plugs. I've researched this; but are there any repercussions (short/long term) until I can fix this?
5. What are the best ignition wires I can get for 50/50 street/hwy driving?

Brand X station also messed with the oil filter housing (slow leak still). They told me they knew rotaries, but then started talking about it only running on 1 cylinder/piston after I paid the bill. I asked about trailing and leading plugs--they said they didn't know what I was talking about. They allegedly cleaned the t-body and replaced the oil pan gasket (slow leak still). I don't even know where to start on that matter.

They charged me $89, parts only, for Omni ignition wires that go for $15 that I didn't even ask for. Gates V belts were placed, and I hope that's alright. I squawked and they want it back to get it right.????

Excuse my cluelessness, but I'm still researching and any input would be appreciated. The only vehicle I've done minimal work on is my 88 Bronco. TIA!

We've got at least a few people in Houston. Hopefully, they'll post soon and direct you to a reliable mechanic.

Use Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) for your fuel injector cleaner. Throw a full bottle in your gas tank at your next fill-up. The MMO will help to both clean your injectors and reduce carbon inside the engine. It's magical stuff.

The plugs won't do any harm. The reason Mazda says it uses two different kinds of plugs on the 13B is that the trailing plug (the BUR9EQ) fires 'hotter' to try to burn up what would otherwise be unignited fuel.

One side effect of all 7EQs may be more afterburn (exhaust popping) and you may risk clogging or destroying your cats if you leave it too long (months.) Notice all the maybes. I don't know for sure.

You definitely got fucked at that shop. Do not go back. They'll only **** you again and charge you for it (again.)

The OEM (Mazda) plug wires are a perfectly good product. Whatever wires you have on the car now, check their resistance with a multimeter. They should be at 16Kohms per 1 meter (3.28 feet.) So you'll have to measure the length of each wire as you go.

Rockin' thread about plug wires:

Oil filter housing leak - is it leaking from the base of the oil filler neck? This is an easy fix. There are o-rings inside that have probably failed. Just remove the neck and change them out.

The oil filter mounts on the rear end housing and uses two o rings for sealing. There are two nuts underneath this mounting boss that you can use a 10mm wrench the remove/tighten the oil filter base.
Do a search for 'oil leak' in the 2nd Gen section and you'll get a tonne of 411 on fixing the oil pan leak.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! Just went out and got some MMO. It was my old boyfriend who gave this to me; he always did have a wicked sense of humor! Now I'm ready to raise Cain with this shop.

You're welcome!

Here's some more...

Gates belts have never lasted very long on my car. Other people have used them without problems. So, FYI:

You can use a normal compression tester on a rotary.

If you get 100+psi on each rotor you're rockin'. Below 85psi means it's time to be nervous.

Thanks so much! It looks like what they did must be undone. They put Gates upper and lower radiator hoses on also so I'll think I'll change those out.

The AC is shot, but the body and paint are in near perfect condition. 95% of the driving was on the highway before I got it. I'm going to dedicate myself to the Maz for a while, and I've got a ways to go.

If driving it were not like a dream, I wouldn't bother!

There are oil pan gaskets out there. I just use RTV sealant and gasket remover spray when I need to take it off. Btw if ac is dead, thats like 50lbs to lose

Not to mention the space it will open up for working around the engine.

Btw, it would be a good idea for you to activate your private messaging. It's *very* helpful.

Wink

Private messaging activated--never used a forum before.

OK, so w/o AC, it's -50 lbs. Too bad I live in Houston; yesterday was in the 80's.

It's got a sunroof, so no racing. Which I need so I can flip off those fancy SUVs who run up my tail when I'm not paying attention.

The oil pan gasket is oozing a thick black substance around it with some engine oil. My oil levels have dipped minimally, but it's only been 300 miles since they did the job. Hmmm...maybe it's molasses.

What does a sunroof have to do with racing a car? Btw, when you're hot roll down the windows, open the sunroof and enjoy the weather. I cant stand ac really (annoys me to be sitting in a cold car w/ goose bumps on a hot day). Call me wierd

Someone told me that racers don't like sunroofs. Don't ask me why.

Naw, I'll get the AC done in May. Too much noise in Houston and trash flying on the highways. Which means my stereo sounds better.

Anyway, #6 & 8 plugs, or 7 & 9?
