Trying to start new engine

ok, i bought a turbo 2 shell a couple months ago and put in a jdm 13b. i am in the process of doing my custom front mount, i'll have to wait till next week to get the gas to weld stainless. well anyways, i removed all emmissions, put a full 3" dual exhaust, act hd unsprung clutch, koyo radiator, black magic e-fan, dual belt pulleys, and others mods i cant think of right now. no internal mods. its a jdm motor from osakajdmmotors. i hope their reputable. well i tried starting it this evening to see if it would start without the downpipe, or maf sensor hooked up. it made a clunking sound when trying to start. after cranking a little while it fired up and died. not sure if im getting enough fuel pressure, i have a gauge on the regulator and when i turn the key on it doesnt read anything. probably dying because the maf isnt hooked up to intake. im just concerned because of the way it sounds when im cranking it. this is my first rotary. they seem interesting and i want to get into messing around with them. so, not sure exactly how they sound. i'll try post some pics of it soon. i dont know how to get the pictures from "my pictures" to the web.

Have you done a compression test? Bad compression = no start/idle, no matter what you do.

mechanical clunking is bad

but it won't run without the air flow meter attached either way.

Yes you can use a regular comp. tester. Just set it so that it doesn't record max compression, so you get 3 spikes in the gauge. Anything less than 80 psi on each face I think would require a rebuild. Looks like you have the fuel mods taken care of though. Nice work.

ok, i did a compression test today..i got about 90 on front rotor on all sides.. the rear has about 80 on only one side.. it sound wierd on the rear. the gauge only jumps the needle once every revolution.. i think it has a bad apex seal. well i guess i'll be tearing it down. im debating on doing a half bridge since its getting torn apart. what do you guys think?
