Trying to start Engine sat for a year NOT A NOOB

Im not getting good compression from my front housing but im getting a ton of smoke.

You have stuck seals. Did you try putting a little oil in the chambers to build up compression? After it runs a few minutes it should clear up.

If all else fails, a push start never does.

is the exhaust manifold already on?

if so...you can take it off and inspect the condition of the apex seals yourself.

It's probably just stuck from sitting. Assembly lube and associate junk will clog the seals and stop them from moving. Once it starts up all that stuff will melt away.

Mine does the same thing minus the smoke...

Engine sat for a while, i bought it with the engine not moving, put oil in the leading plug sockets, and top oil, put in 5th gear, rocked back and fourth, broke the engine free. cleaned area around spark plugs where i put in oil (installed old plugs) installed wires, made sure eccentric shaft was rotating, tried to start, smelt gas really strong..

After i replace the spark plugs (this weekend) if that doesn't work, would push starting be my next step? starter seems good, i'm not using the best battery ever. (one out of my honda civic, like 440 cca) the spark plugs are probably a year old. oil has been sitting for 7mo, so has gasoline

Let me know if the push starting does work Man In Black.

I seem to have the same problem with my 88 VERT, seems the engine was sitting for a while before I got it, and does the same thing... Please let us know if you get it started and running and how I would be very interested to know!!!

yeah very interested here as well.

I'm leaning towards that the fuel is there, the compression is there, but the spark isn't. i'm going to head to the auto parts store and pick up some spark plugs and battery real fast.
