Troubleshooting your car from the ECU
Lol, what was the "something"? Any voltage scale over 12 will work, I use a 15v scale on one meter, and a 25v on another, for the higher voltages...As long as you're not trying to read 3.5 volts from a sensor on a 120 volt scale or something goofy like that, you're good to go...
Just figure out from the FSM what the highest possible voltages will be for a particular input, and use the smallest scale you have that will "fit" the maximum voltage in...

It was 3.5V or something like that. It was lower than 9v.
Ok, but now I'm confused (I really suck at electrical stuff if you haven't noticed). We'll use this one as an example : http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...5Fid=22%2D223# . What would I put it on to test the ECU? I'm a bit lost...

You'd go to DCV 25 for the 12v things, and the DCV 5 scale for the sensors & such. That looks like a very good "starter" meter for you guys that are just getting going...
Hmmm, ok. I'll see if that works out for me. The one I linked to is fairly similar to the one I have.
I tried just about everything last weekend, all the different settings... etc. I didn't even get voltage from like 3/4th's of them.
I'm also kinda confused as to which order the pins go in. Which side is the "control unit side". Say, if I'm looking at it from the passenger seat, which is pin 1A?
Sorry for being such a
. I just never did understand electrical stuff very good.

The car's in Oneida, TN. It's about 1.5 hours east of Cookeville. Any help would be cool :-P. For now, one of the biggest problems is lack of money. Got my college job going and my first paychecks coming, well today, so that should be good.
Hermit, if you are looking at the pinout pictures in the FSM, just hold the picture up next to the ECU, and that's where the pins are (with the plugs still on- I have yet to have to pull one of those plugs off). 1A would be the big plug, right side, upper pin. (1B would be the one below it).
Don't know if you've read this yet, but it may help you a bit...

I have one car just for parts and I have the factory service manuel or FSM on cd also if you need a copy , I'm always looking on ebay and calling junkyards looking for complete cars that won't run they are I think easier to work on than most cars alot of people just don't want to mess with them I hate the thought of one ever being scraped
Ack, didn't even know that was there.
Heh, I might as well throw in that I managed to break part of the clip on the "3" connector. The little part you push down. It still works and everything, it's just a bitch to get off... *sigh*

Hermit, you ever heard the saying, "If it works, don't f%ck with it?", lol...
I don't pull any connectors apart or bend any wiring near connectors on this car, unless I absolutely have to...

and Wayne I really liked your advice I printed a copy of start of the thread I have one I'm working on now I'm having alot of trouble with I've been lucky so far and not had any really bad problems but I'm going to stop on this one and go back to the ECU and work my way out
A: STICKY / ARCHIVE !!!!
B: Im grounding my tester to the shifter/transmission. Is this a good enough ground to get accurate readings? (I'm not driving it... since I can't get it started
