Transmission Swap?

I may need a transmission swap for my 87 N/A, as my 3rd gear syncro is continually getting worse. I wanted to know if the syncro itself may be replaced, or if the entire transmission must be replaced. If so, how much work would it be? Could it be done in a weekend? Thanks

yes the synchro can be replaced seperately. i have rebuilt trannys and it is more work than the engine rebuild. if you do, do it, on your own, replace all the synchros and all the bearings. they are pretty cheap.

hm ok, sounds like it might be easier to just buy a used tranny. how much work(hours)/money(dollars) would that set me back?

Used trans usually go for $100-$150. No idea what a rebuilt one cost or whatever. You may want to do this: Call a trans shop and see if you can bring your trans in (pull yourself) and have them open it up real quick and tell you if they can rebuild it for a reasonable price (without charging you). If they can't rebuild it reasonably, then get an used trans. A trans shop here is willing to do that for me, but I decided on a different route.
Book time on pulling a tranny (and of course putting it back in is about the same amount) is 3 hours. That's easy. And in case you don't know, you can usually go faster than book time if you're good with tools.

i can do a complete tranny swap in 2.5 hours, but i broke 6 of them in my old NA car, so I had a lot of practice, and no stuck bolts. You should be able to do it in 5 no problem tho.

best trick: when you try to put the tranny back in, the input shaft ususally has a hard time mating with the pilot bearing. get a ratchet strap, and tilt your motor back about 10 degrees, and it will most likely pop right in.
