Transmission Removal Help

I'm trying to Remove the transmissio on my 87 GXL to install a ACT clutch. I've removed the 4 bellhousing bolts but there is a nut on the top center of the bellhousing that is refusing to come loose. There is a slit on the end of the stud that is holding the nut. Can I turn the the stud by the slit? I've tried using a 14mm socket on the bolt but it would slip and strip the nut.

I don't think turning the slit will work but you can give it a try. I have found that the impact sockets sometimes fit a little better than the normal ones so maybe go buy a 14mm impact socket that will fit your wrench and put it on there. You may have to pound it on but hopefully it will hold and not strip the nut.

Can I just cut the stud and replace it? Or is it permanently attached to the engine?

Thanks for the information. everything was going smooth until I tried to get that bolt off. Funny how one bolt can give you all that trouble.

I've pulled both an 87 and a 91 transmission. They both used all bolts, and no studs. FWIW - I tilted the engine back (to angle the flywheel downward) and wedged it that way with a stick.
Cosmo makes a good point - a set 6 point of impact sockets is a good investment.
