transmission noise
i just replaced my clutch and before i did that it made a cowbell type of noise and i replaced everything other than the transmission. the clutch did need to be replaced and i replaced the rear main oil seal, resurfaced the flywheel, put in a new pressure plate, pilot bearing, and throw out bearing. i put it all together and it is still making the noise and now it will sometimes hang and not want to go into any gear. its a 1986 rx7 n/a. when it does go into gear the clutch feels really good and grabs strong but as soon as i start driving it a little it just hangs and doesnt go into any gear. its really annoying and i want it fixed fast but dont know what might be messed up.

I'm going to say in addition to the fork, check your slave cylinder for proper operation. It pushes on the fork so if you're chenking the fork, might as well check it too.
If either are bad, rock auto has replacements for cheap, at least the last time i checked.

When is it making this noise? Only once on takeoff.... all the time.... when playing "Don't Fear the Reaper".....?
Also, let me refer you to this drawing I made a while back.
If the machine shop didn't machine the mounting surface for the pressure plate, then it's going to slip. If they only machined the friction surface, then the flywheel's friction surface is now that much farther away, and will be more prone to slipping. I know this because it happened to me.

it makes the noise when i rev it in neutral, when i drive it in gear and usually starts around 2500-3000rpm. i do not have any issues with slipping clutch right now. it just wont go in any gear sometimes. i might be taking the tranny back off on wednesday and ill try my other transmission and see if that fixes it. (other transmission just have old syncros on it but is in good shape). if it does then ill know its the tranny and ill just have it rebuilt when i get the cash and time. but i will still like to have help if anyone can think of what can be wrong with it.

no it doesnt move in and out. and its getting easier to get into gear and isnt hanging up as much the more i drive it around but the noise is what is bothering me and also the small vibration it has over 4k rpm. i might take it to a transmission place to have it looked at soon if i cant figure it out.

Start up your car and let it idle, does it make noise......
If it does step on the clutch and hold it down while the car idles, does the noise go away.....
If it does go away most likely your trans is no good.
Atleast that's from my experience, when pressing on the clutch it realeases the clutch disk which means the transmission stops spinning so it's when the noise goes away.maybe the bearings in the trans are no good.
I'm going through the same thing on my turbo rx2 and that's the only thing I can think off cause I also changed the complete clutch, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, resurfaced flywheel and the noise is still there.
