Transmission mounts replacement???

Transmission mounts replacement???
Ok, I've searched here, but I can't seem to find anyone explaining how to replace all three tranny mounts. Is this possible with car on stands, and without removal of tranny or any other major component? I figure the crossmember mount shouldn't be a problem (hopefully), but how about the others - each side of a "Y mount" ???

only 1 mount. under the transmission. i can take a photo of mine tomorrow. if your wanting to replace the mount it shoudlnt be hard. some of it is a pain in the *** to get to with it out of the car. in the car i dont know.

THere is one mounting location for the tranny with four component parts to it. The crossmember whcih has a wagon wheel looking rubber mount in it, two "sides of Y" which are really the transmission mounts" and a bracket with a big pin that sticks down through the wagon wheel thing in the crossmember.
Here is what ya do...
Put the car up on stands, put a jack under the tranny, preferably with a piece of wood between the tranny and the jack just jack it up enough so that it touches. Unbolt the big bolt in the center and take off the bottom washer (should have a rubber side to it). Unbolt the 4 big bolts that hold the crossmember to the subframe rails (2 on either side).
now lower the tranny with the jack about an inch or two so that you can get to the 12mm bolt that holds the drivers side "side of Y" to the crossmember. The other side you can get to without lowering the tranny. now you can pull the cross member off and get to the other bolts to replace whatever parts you want to replace.
The sides of y lock into the crossmember via a tab and a lip on the mounting points, so make sure that you get it dialed in right when you put it back together.
I put the competition "sides of y" in my car.... they transfer some more vibration than the stock

Its funny, after my 5spd swap, the Y became useless. Only the middle stud holes the tranny mount. Its sad looking, but we couldn't get it to fit otherwise.

I thought somebody actually made a set of brackets for the auto-manual swap to make it work correctly. might try searching for those

I agree, I heard that the middle part wasn't suppose to bear much weight, it's the Y-thingy that bears the majority of the weight.
Just curious, are there any polyurethane tranny mounts? I've been wanting to change my engine, tranny mounts, and the cross member too. I am leaning towards polyurethane engine mounts and competition tranny mounts, since there're obviously no other alternative other than stock.

Does anyone know of a source for the center mount? And where are these high-performance side mounts coming from? Autozone only lists the side parts and they're $40 a pop - O'Reilly's doesn't list anything.

When I changed out my clutch this summer, i found the center mount tore up.
Since this is probably an outrageously priced and scarce part, I adapted my own.
First thing you do is cut out the remnants of the center piece and trim the ribs flush, leave the outer part in place. See pic 1.
Next find some used front strut bar bushings, preferably ones that aren't rock hard, the poly ones work best. I have a bench top belt/disc sander that I flattened faces out with, so the edges are square. You then put the bushing on back on the strut rod bolt and sand the outer diameter down to where it is a snug fit into the center bushing of the tranny mount. (the trick here is to put enough pressure on the bushing for it too sand, but lightly enough so that the bushings will spin slowly, this is how you keep the bushing round) You need 3 of these. These will now slide over the bolt on the wing mount. See pic 2.
Pic 3 shows it in place ready to bolt up.
Have fun.

That's awesome - thanks for your help - I actually went to the local parts store with my micrometer and found one the same size and cut it down with a hacksaw, then made my side mounts from Jeep bodylift spacers. Now THAT's solid.

I've got the "competition" tranny mount blocks from Mazda, and a new crossmember. What's the best way to install it? I'm having some trouble.
My terms: crossmember, Y-mount (that bolts to the tranny), and the mounts have what I'll call a top and bottom stud. "top" refers to the top of the car.
I've had the stuff apart for awhile, so first I want to make sure I'm puting it together correctly. Does the gold-colored washer/space go on the top stud, on top of the Y-mount? Also, I'm just having a hard time getting it all together. I bolted the Y-mount to the tranny first. Then I bolted the drivers side mount to the crossmember, since the access to that lower stud is very limited once the crossmember is up. I raised the crossmember into place, and wiggled the other mount into place. I just can't get the gold washers/spacers onto the top studs of the new mounts. Am I doing it right?

It's been a while, but essentially, if I'm remembering right, you'll first bolt the y plate to the transmission, then install the crossmember over that using the spacers and washers. After that you'll bolt the whole thing into the car. Getting the bolts through the spacers and then tightening those same bolts down was a real pain as I remember. The other thing that was a pain is that 3 of my 4 crossmember bolt holes were screwed up, and I had to rethread them all on my back under the car. Sorry I couldn't be more help, mine's not really very stock now, so it's hard to remember the way it used to be.

After a couple trial-and-errors, I got it last night. I bolted the 2 rubber blocks to the Y-plate (with the gold spacer on top), then bolted that to the tranny. I then had to pull one of the studs of one of the rubber mounts downward (the stud does not go all the way through the mount), and pry the metal tube in the crossmember one direction to get the crossmember to go on. I just had to use an open-end wrench, halfway on the nut through that tiny hole to tighten the drivers side mount. 2 bolt holes lined up fine on the drivers side of the crossmember; for the passenger side I had to shove a screw driver in the hole and pry it to line up, then put one bolt in to hole it in place.
Funny things I noticed. One bolt didn't match the other 3 (holding crossmember to car) and wanted to go in crooked, I think someone did this once before and did it incorrectly. There was also one nut missing that was supposed to hold the drivers side tranny mount to the crossmember, so the passenger side mount was twisted all to hell. I found a spare nut that connected the MC to the brake booster on my parts car.
