Transmission ID codes.

Before I start, I have an 88 GXL.

I bought a different transmission to go back into the car (since the last guy destroyed every synchro from running with a bad clutch) the bell housings are a little different. The one i pulled out has ribs on it, the new one doesn't. It also has a different ID code on it, one starts with an "A" and one starts with a "D" I think the one I pulled out starts with an "A". I measured it out, and it all looks right as far as the measurements go. The only difference was that the one I pulled out was a quater inch longer from the crossmember to the end of the bellhousing.

I picked up the transmission off Rxmfn7 and I think I remember him telling me that the transmission was from an 87Se, rebuilt, then put into an 88GXL for 10k miles. (Correct me if I'm wrong).

Does all this sound right? Any one know one way or another if it will/won't fit, or any differences I might find?

The trans was from a 88SE that I picked up as a parts car. The last owner had it rebuilt, then wrecked the car, and sold it to me.... Anyway yea as far as I know it's the original transmission from a 88SE. I pulled it out of the car myself so I know it fits

Ah, cool. Heh, took me so damn long to get the clutch in that I havn't started until now. When I picked up the tranny from you I had just ordered the clutch, and I just recieved it last thursday. I was just wondering about why the bellhousing's were different and if the internals were any different.

Yea , I dunno maybe someone else can help you out on that one. I know S5 N/As has ribbed reinforcements on the housings, is it possible the one you had was a S5 N/A tranny?

That's totally possible because I did notice where someone drew marking lines on the driveshaft to make sure they matched it back up in the right position. In addition to that, the tranny that was in there leaked oil like nobodies buisness. It's all but junk in my opinion. What's a transmission rebuild on a manual rx7 go for anyway?

HOly ****, ribbed reinforcments? Ok, im sorry if this is off topic, but on my old 88GTU (which i was told was original everything) had said ribs on the tranny and it looked different from any other S4 tranny (which lookes almost slimmer and with no ribs). Anyone?

Actually, I remember reading something about the history of the rx7 transmission over at mazdatrix, I'm gonna go take a look at it and post my findings in a few mins.

http://www.mazdatrix.com/g1.htm

It's not a specific answer, but it provides a little bit of insight and background.

Nice link, I just got off it myself. Now on there, it says that the 86+ turbo transmission is ribcased. the transmission in my 88GTU was ribcased (though i KNOW it cant be a turbo tranny i used N/A clutches and ect ect, and the N/A tranny i used to replace it with fit and operated correctly). Anyone have an answer for this?

Well It does say on there that Mazda used to mix and match transmissions left and right and had many variations through out the j-spec and a-spec markets. It could be an n/a transmission with a turbo bellhousing... or even more likely a ribcased bell housing from a 12a? Kinda shooting in the dark here. I can post my transmission ID's if anyone could Identify them.

I have an 88GTU and I am told that I have the ribbed TII tranny. Now you can have a TII tranny and an NA engine that would require an NA clutch. The tranny and the clutch are separate parts of a vehicle. tranny = gears and clutch = engine pawer transferred to the tranny.

In order for it to have a T2 tranny, it would have to have a T2 driveshaft as well. N/A and T2 transmissions were different lengths.....
