Transmission Help!!!!!!

so i popped open the boot of my shifter about two days ago.. ive been meaning to make a post but busy with wiring and work.. working my friends lada and my other friends 4runner plus putting a system into my car... just speakers.. no subs.

anywhos my question goes like this... while taking apart the shifter.. rod and everything to check on my "transmission shifter bushings or bearings" because my brother (army vtech) has told me my shifter is really sloppy in neutral and its quite hard to find gears from neutral he said new bushings would clear this up.. all i had to do was open it up pull them out carefully and not drop anything into the tranny.. well when i opened it up, i found some broken plastic.. right under two rubber soles. just before the bottom of the shifter pole.. its what holds the pole in place i guess.. anywhos there is a well filled with oil.. my friend says the guy i bought it off of might have been a n00b and could have filled the tranny from the top with fluid.. but its not tranny fluid colour.. usually its red is it not? anywhos its actual oil... he said it should be greased.. not so much oiled... so im comming to the pro's hopefully you can help...

sorry for the non mechanic lingo..

cheers,

cody

Transmission can use vary the different types of fluid depending on manufacturer. ATF is almost always red. Some transmissions do use regular oil. I'm not sure on FC's as i've never replaced the fluid in one. Check the OEM specs. Gear Oil smells much worse then Engine Oil so you should be able to tell.

The plastic piece goes around the shift lever near the bottom i believe to hold it at a certain height or position when installed. Either way if it's broken you should replace it.

I check over my tranny at the end of each racing season. Replace the two half’s (Plastic parts) and just use a small amount of EP2 Grease or lithium grease (The white stuff as you would know it. Do not fill through the shifter top section. No No No.

ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) is red. It doesn't sound like you've got an automatic, so you shouldn't be seeing it in there. Manual transmissions require a 75W-90 GL4 Gear oil. GL5 gear oil smells terrible, like sulpher. GL5 shouldn't be used because some of the additives will eat away at parts of the transmission. GL4 isn't nearly as smelly. All gear oils that I've seen are yellow (except royal purple, I'd immagine it's purple). The shifter hole is seperate from the transmission fluild, you cannot fill it from there, but there should still be some fluid in there.

If the oil in the trans is dirty (brown/black) then yes I would definitely replace it. It's simple enough to do on your own but you may need a small manual pump to get it up there. I think you can get em at auto zone for like 10 bucks. Someone who has done it before chime in.

If you get fluid in a sqeezy nozzled bottle you can squeeze it in through a hose from the engin bay or from the side. A funnel really doesn't work, the fluid's too thick. The pump is by far the easiest way to do it.

If you don't know when the fluid was changed last, then change it. Same goes for any fluid in the car.
