does anyone know around how much it would cost to rebuild a 5 speed t2 trans? i know that all shops are different but if anyone has had it done and could tell me a price that would be great, thanks a lot.

First time dealer did mine under warranty $1100. That was remove, rebuild, install.
Second time when engine was being installed, so trans was out, $450 Syncros and 1 bearing.

that's the thing, it varies so much depenging not only on where you go but what you need. most of the time what you need is not fully known until the job starts. I'm in the market right now for a rebuilt (or good used) myself, and one shop said if it's just syncros ($20 a pop) then you can get the whole thing out, built, and in for $300-400. if you need actual gears, price starts to go up a lot. there's other parts in there too.

at this point, since I personally know my tranny has run out of fluid more than once I am looking for a good used (~100k miles) to put in my car, maybe replacing syncros before hand. this is rather than have mine opened up and finding out it'll cost $1000+ to make it right again.

Too bad you couldn't buy a rebuild kit, with instructions and do it yourself. that would be nice.

^ It would be but a little complicated. Rebuilding a tranny takes a lot of attention to detail and nobody will warranty such a kit. Mine needs new syncros and probably bearings so I wish I could find such a kit.
